While on the subject of plugs, is there a colder plug than Autolite 45? I just don't want to look dumb and ask for Autolite 43 or 44 if there is no such beast.
I use Champion plugs myself, RF11YC to be exact, but for the longest time I used RF9YC. I cannot find those anymore, but with my newer engine I really do not need them.
Just to see if I can reduce some pinging when I tow without retarding the ignition so far or paying for the more expensive gas. I have never had a problem with fouling the 45's; they almost seem to be too clean. And colder plugs don't rob any power, so I figured it was worth a try.
Although changing spark plugs can reduce pinging they aren;t the only source of the problem.
Flashing in the combustion chamber, valve reliefs on the piston, exhaust valve edge, carbon deposits etc. all contribute to pinging.
The "rattling" of the valves is TWO flame fronts colliding and causing the valves to flutter.
Reading plugs is really a science. Some like to have the "ring" halfway up the insulator, others want it at the base. Some like to see graying on the electrode. Some side gap, and so on.
