Hi Again ...
Since getting the 51 mercury, i have had a bit of trouble decoding the data plates. Have yet to find a website to help..have left an email with tom at his mercury truck site, but have yet to hear back so im thinking one of you veterans can break it down for me.
first plate located on the firewall by the solenoid and passenger hood springs :
STYLE CIRCM-81A
Body # 25028
1BDN-137
24
Second plate in the middle of the firewall:
Engine 1EE-1865 Model M1
Trim 14 Paint 24
Serial number MDA83AHN-31405
thanks for the help everyone...but am pretty sure its a 51? even though the tag says N...are we sure that indicates a 50? i really don't think someone switched the tags on this baby...same owner for the past 27 years, and he bought it from a farm in southern alberta...but ive been wrong before..lol.
it has the three teeth horizontil grill, the mercury emblem is on the hood, and the V8 emblem is on the body panel in between the hood and grill...didn't the 50's have a way different grill and the 52's had the word Mercury in place of the V8 emblem?? like i said, this is all new to me..
registration says its a 51.....last year it was registered was in 1983...
hoping to clear up the mystery???
its gotta be a 51...hoping...
as for the engine number ...where do i find that? is it stampled on the block someplace?? or is the 1865 just indicate it being a 239?
once again, all you help is greatly appreciated.
will have to figure out how to send pics...
I missed the N part. That shouldn't be in the vin. It should be the last two digits of the year. Ford of Canada did this from 1946-52. I got plates from 47, 48 and 51 plus have seen 50 and 52.
As far as the engine goes, the 239 was the only engine offered for your truck.
Sounds like you have a 1951 truck.

Normally in place of the N it would have 50 or 51, but the info I've collected seems to indicate some overlap as they shifted from 50 to 51. Several 52's used the letter P, 53 was R, 54 was S, etc.
I can't say about Canada, but south of the border a vehicle was often titled by year when it was sold, rather than when it was produced. Sounds like your sheetmetal is definitely 51. That's what I'd call it and ignore Ford's typical inconsistencies.
I know the 53 and up trucks went to letters. I got the chassis part books for 48-55. 53 is Q, 54 is R and 55 is S. My 48-52 chassis parts book says they used the number system on all trucks starting in 1946. Here's some of my examples:

Uh, yeah, letters always screw me up. 53 is Q, etc.
I don't have the book on CDN vins, just copying what guys have posted so its suspect. I have seen 2 posted that show the letter P instead of 52 - one on a panel and the other a std cab pickup....by inference I figured N would be 50.....but I've been wrong before.
