decent rule of thumb is: Aluminum cases require ATF and cast iron cases use Gear oil (80-90wt). The exception is the NP 203 case that should have 50wt oil (30wt or 40 wt oil since 50 is hard to find). The heavier gear oil will not lubricate the 203 and it will fail.
Try a search above. This has been discussed for years.
np208 is chain driven, np205 is gear driven... Both have same basic functions, 2-speed tranny cases. If I were to put gear oil in my np208, the case would struggle so hard to move the gear oil around that it would be very stiff, and gear oil is made of crude oil that would probably eat parts of the chain away. If you were to put gear oil in a auto tranny, there would probably be very hard shift. and also would intern be working too hard and eventually the tranny would die, and in the cold may not shift at all.
Np205 is a 2-speed gear driven t-case that is required to run 80/90, but you may subsitute that for a less thick gear oil, if you are in a very cold climate, or your t-case has trouble shifting into gear.
i did try a search with the info i had and i kept getting things like over filled the transfer case in my navigator......but thanks guys for the help i think its pretty clear that i need gear oil, so hopefully my truck will be back on the road tonight!
