as far as axle, It gets HAIRY, but it can be done, but you will need several special tools.
Like an impact that can develop a ton of torque to seat a crush pinion. and then an inch pound torque wrench.
Be sure to get a bunch of pinion nuts and crush sleeves.
I would have two sleeves and two nuts on hand.
Then you need a dial indicator as well as a magnetic mount, and then oil based paste paint from an art store, to see pinion and differential "mesh". then maybe you could do a gear swap.
I think I seen kits on ebay for gear swaps. But Oreilly's had all the nuts and sleeves I needed to do mine.
Above all else, your side gears may be worn and need replacing, I would look into changing all that at once if needed.
