Ive got a '70 360 with c8ae-h heads, f427 intake,Hooker comp headers and a problem. the head gaskets I bought have no hole for the rear water passage. am i supposed to block it off< or do I have the wrong gasket
According to my book the gaskets should both be marked for front. The FE gasket has no front water passage. The rear has a tear drop shape water passage about 2.5" long
I kind of recall this wehen doing my 352. The one side the text (FRONT) was up (visable) the opposite side of the engine the text (FRONT) was to the block. Cant recall which side was which sorry.
Robert is right. It will appear that your installing one upside down....well you will be. But that's the right way. You want both bannana shaped slots to the rear of the block.
You want the front coolant passages blocked off and the rears open. the gaskets should be marked " front" install them towards the front with the letters facing up.
I forgot about this topic sorry. I've had a few engines where the front and rear slots were opened on the gaskets. I'm thinking someone thought the gaskets were supposed to be open on both sides and cut the other slot possibly. The heads have 2 coolant slots because they can be used in either left or right application. The front slot is simply blocked by the gasket. Some forget this and re engineer the gaskets thinking they are doing the right thing. Another common thing to find is one head gasket on backwards. Being both gaskets are marked "front" used right side up on both sides would put one slot in the front. My 390 was like this. I didn't see it till I removed the AC compressor and brackets. Then it's clear as day as the square gasket edge should stick out the front on both sides. It's also possible the gaskets just wore out. My 406 came with a played out set of steels that were rotted thru the front coolant slots on both sides!!! LOL Looks like they had be reused a bunch of times for 30 years!!
I'm a tard... I discovered my oooolllldddd head gaskets simply rotted out at the water passages. one gasket still had a little scrap of material left containing the bleed hole that my new gasket has.
mental note: Think first, then post!!!!!!!
It will cause overheating, since the coolant won't flow properly. It takes a shortcut thru the open front passage and does not circulate well to the rear of the engine.
