ive got a 85f150 302 with EFI that i swapped out of a different truck this engine has a bad spark knock my question is does the computer set the timing or do i with a timing light or can it be that the other truck has a different computer allso i may have some vacume lines crossed the truck idles verry well but when giving it the gas it sounds terrible at any speed thanks
Set it at 10 BTDC with the spout plug unhooked. This is the factory setting and seems to work best on EFI with 87 octane fuel. If your still having issues after thet, then I would check the fuel pressure. It should be around 30-32 at idle and 38-40 with no vacuum to the regulator.
I had this same issue but i bumped up the fuel octane for a week or so because i think i had some bad gas. I changed to a different fuel brand and it cleared right up. But checking timing would be a good idea to eliminate that possibility.
Check you knock sensor if it is disconnected or or the tiny wire in it is broke, Your computer will not know to adjust the timing. Disconnect the wire to it and put your multimeter set to millivolts on it and with a punch and hammer knock on the block, next to it. You should get spikes of voltage, If not take it out and tap on it if it makes voltage it should be alright if not replace that. The wires in it are tiny little things if it was bumped hard or dropped they could break.
