a/c smells like coolant

I think the other heater core is in the back of the truck an as far as using a brass core i don't see the point as long as you use the right anti freeze you won't have any problems the heater cores go out from abuse by that I mean not keeping up on ur preventive maintenance

Do the pressure test to verify the leak. Autozone will loan tools for free if you don't have what you need. Repair the leak that you find.

You are over thinking matters here by worrying about the rear core. If it is leaky it is a separate job.

Purchase the best available parts you can afford from a vendor you trust. Responsibly maintain your cooling system going forward. Do a thorough search of this board and benefit from the experience of others.

For me, the hardest part of this job was moving my fat a$$ away from the keyboard and getting started.

Just the opposite is true. Aluminum heater cores and radiators transfer out heat much better than the copper or brass ones do.
