I'm about to add some Firestone airbags to my '03 F250. I've had them in the past on other trucks and love them.
Question I have is this:
For my truck, they make two models that look almost identical, but one says that it will fit with 5th wheels and goosenecks. It's about $10 more than the "standard" one. I don't have a 5th wheel now, but I might in the future.
Any issues with putting on the version that will work with a 5th wheel / gooseneck? If not, I'd rather put this version on "just in case".
yeah ive got the airlift bags and they have two versions as well but for the airlift ones the bracket is slighty different as well and bolt location i believe it is to accomadate the support steel from the 5th wheel, however they do make a air ride system for the 5th wheel itsself but if you plan on getting a 5th wheel later i would go with the one for that
I am thinking about getting the kit also so ive got a question....Where are you guys getting the whole kit from,and about how much are you paying?thanks
The standard firestone kit goes on top of the leaf springs and has a bracket bolt to the outside of the frame rail.
The model for the goose/5th goes on top of the the axle tube right next to the springs and has a bracket that attaches to the frame where the bumpstops currently are.
If you go to their site you can view the instructions for both that have diagrams as far as how they get mounted.
i got my bags from jegs and the compressor i got for airhornsoftexas.com along with my horns and tanks and such and as for a gauge i got the blue ice digital air pressure dual gauge from speedfreaks.com total for my set up was
bags = 175
compressor and tanks and horns = 650
digital air press. gauge = 175
total = 1000
I was looking at getting bags to. I know that bags keep the rear from sagging when towing or when its loaded. My question is, if you are not towing or loaded, is the ride better with the bags filled? I've been told that the ride is not as bouncy. Is this true? Also, does having bags lift the rear or is the height the same? Thanks for any info.
I have the firestone bags that mount inside of the framerails and they work great, also they look better because you don't see them like the type that mount on top of the leaf springs.
When you are not towing or hauling heavy loads you want to lower the air pressure to 5 psi or lower otherwise it does make the rear alot stiffer and can ride pretty rough.
Having bags on your truck only makes the rear ride higher when you have more than a few pounds of air in them. With 5 psi or less the height stays the same.
Here's a pic of mine:
