79 4oo m heads just rebuilt. but the driver side side make a tapping noise and noise is louder behind front tire towards the tranny. exhaust smokes when engine been running for awhile. when i give it gas and rpms climb it sounds like a deisel truck for some reason? i'm lost. all plugs and wires, cap and rotor replaced. help!!
The first thing I would do is remove the valve cover on the right side and do a visual inspection before damage is done. Also recheck timing and firing order.
Its A 4-speed, Where Would The Fluid Come From? I Smell Gas Fumes Really Good While Driving, Does This Mean Anything? JUST CHECKED PLUGS #5 CYLINDER IS BLACK REST LOOK BRAND NEW. COMPRESSION IS FINE. WHEN HEADS WHERE REBUILD THIS CYLINDER NEEDED VALVE REPLACED NOT SEETING. WHAT WOULD CAUSE THIS?
It would appear you have identified the problem area. I would look closely at the valve geometry for that cylinder. Make sure the push rods are seated and are not too long as they are not adjustable without shims or different rods.
If the valve is held open it will burn. Also make sure you have spark to that plug.
If the plug is wet with fuel, it means that the cylinder isn't firing.
That could be low compression or no compression or no spark. You should have seen a problem with that cylinder when you took the compression test. Check your plug wires and your firing order again.
compression good, black plug means it's firing, but possibly rich? Could it be a problem with the exhast valve not opening far enough/long enough? Sounds like a valvetrain problem, only being on one cyl.
the 2nd rocker in seems loose to me. when torned apart all the lifters where moving fine. could it be a bent rod? bad cam lope? any tips to fine out? not sure what else to do.
The tapping noise might be a pushrod and rockerarm slapping together. You will have to take out the rods and measure to make sure they are thee correct length, and roll them to see if they are bent. Look at the rocker to see if the contact pattern looks good.
