Gas Fill/ Vent Problem

One of my cooworker's company trucks is giving him problems taking gas. Its a 2004 F-250 5.4 Automatic Longbed so it has the larger gastank. The steel vent line looks to be fine and the truck runs fine. However filling up takes 3to four times as long due to the fact that the pump continuosly shuts off. Im wondering if the safety valve inside the tank is the one causing the problem. Before we go dropping the tank I would like a second opinion. If anyone has any experience or input Id really appreciate it.

Thanks

The truck may need a harpoon mod to the fuel tank so it will fill faster.

I wouldn't do a harpoon to a GAS driven vehicle. Only the diesel. Harpoon will prob turn on the CEL.

I can't see the Harpoon helping it fill faster. Didn't help my diesel fill faster, it has a problem taking fuel fast too.

I believe the Harpoon just helps it fill more at the end, and without shutting off as much near the end.

Look in the TSB's. I remember reading one on a filler pipe extension issue that caused an issue with filling fuel. here is one listed for the 05 and newer, maybe it can help:
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=3 width="96%" border=3><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="25%" bgColor=#ffffff>TSB

06-19-15

</TD><TD align=left width="65%" bgColor=#ffffff>
</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#0000ff colSpan=2>Publication Date: September 18, 2006</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
<TABLE border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width=230>FORD:

</TD><TD>2005-2007 F-250, F-350</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

ISSUE:

Some 2005-2007 F-Super Duty 250/350 vehicles may experience premature automatic shut off of the fuel fill nozzle, or repeated fuel shut off at the fuel station delivery nozzle. Vehicles operated in muddy or dusty environments can encounter a dirt-clogged carbon canister system. More specifically, the carbon canister's vent, fresh-air box, and filters, clogged with dirt from operating in such environments.

ACTION:

Use the following Service Procedure to resolve the concern if the carbon canister system is dirt clogged.

<TABLE border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width=80>NOTE:</TD><TD>THIS TSB ONLY APPLIES TO F-250/350 PICKUPS, AND F-250/350 PICKUP BOX DELETE / CHASSIS CAB VEHICLES.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Inspect the vehicle carbon canister system and if it is found to be dirt clogged then continue with this TSB.

<TABLE border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width=80>NOTE:</TD><TD>IF THE VEHICLES CARBON CANISTER SYSTEM IS NOT DIRT CLOGGED, THEN PROCEED WITH NORMAL DIAGNOSTICS AND DO NOT CONTINUE WITH THIS TSB.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Vehicles with Pick Up Boxes:

  1. If the vehicle was built on or after 9/14/2006, proceed to Step 2. If the vehicle was built prior to 9/14/2006, replace the carbon canister assembly. This carbon canister has a revised internal filter media.
  2. Relocate the fresh-air intake port to a more protected location using the Fresh Air Hose Kit, for pick up applications only.
Vehicles with Pick Up Box Removed or Chassis Cab:

  1. If the vehicle was built on or after 9/14/2006, proceed to Step 2. If the vehicle was built prior to 9/14/2006, replace the carbon canister assembly. This carbon canister has a revised internal filter media.
  2. Relocate the fresh-air intake port to a more protected location using QVM bulletin Q-132 at the body builder's website - https://www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbas/index.htm for fresh air intake routing recommendations.
