2000 Wiper Problem
I have a 2000 Expedition and the front wipers worked great until recently. The first symptom, before they quit working all together, was they wouldn't work on intermittent, just low & high speeds. Then would run on a bit after I turned the switch off. And then the wipers stopped working all together.
I have gotten into it some.
1) Fuses check out ok, and I can hear the switch powering the relay under the hood.
2) I powered the motor manually (with the timer cover off) and the motor worked fine.
3) Checked the harness & it looks like it has power 100% of the time.
4) Thinking the problem was the harness on the motor cover, I hooked up a new motor and that is not the problem. Still not working.
So my only conclusion is that there is a bad ground in the system, the harness is bad, or there is another component I am not aware of. Any help? Thanks in advance.
***Also, the rear wiper motor treated me the same way before it stopped working about a year ago. Never looked into what may be wrong there.
Since you have tested the components seperately, the switch is most likely the problem.
It's not that tough of a replacement, just time and patience.
Good Luck,
Tim
Defect Summary:
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER CARS, SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, AND LIGHT AND MEDIUM DUTY PICKUP TRUCKS. A SWITCH LOCATED IN THE PLASTIC COVER OF THE WIPER MOTOR GEAR CASE COULD MALFUNCTION AND OVERHEAT, POTENTIALLY RESULTING IN LOSS OF INTERMITTENT WIPER FUNCTION, LOSS OF WIPER PARK FUNCTION, COMPLETE LOSS OF WIPER FUNCTION, OR IGNITION OF THE PLASTIC COVER MATERIAL. SWITCH MALFUNCTION IS MOST LIKELY TO OCCUR WHEN THE INTERMITTENT SETTING OF THE WIPERS IS BEING USED, OR WHEN SNOW OR ICE OBSTRUCTS THE BLADES FROM RETURNING TO THE "PARKED" POSITION AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDSHIELD. THESE VEHICLES WERE BUILT AT THE FOLLOWING ASSEMBLY PLANTS: ATLANTA PLANT FROM 2/11/00 THROUGH 7/31/00; CHICAGO PLANT FROM 2/14/00 THROUGH 8/4/00; KANSAS CITY PLANT FROM 2/26/00 TO 9/4/00; KENTUCKY TRUCK PLANT FROM 2/18/00 TO 8/31/00; MICHIGAN TRUCK PLANT FROM 2/23/00 THROUGH 8/3/00; NORFOLK PLANT FROM 2/21/00 THROUGH 7/27/00; WAYNE STAMPING AND ASSEMBLY PLANT FROM 2/25/00 THROUGH 8/15/00; AND WIXOM PLANT FROM 2/15/00 THROUGH 8/8/00.
I pulled up the rear wiper arm and the motor works, but it doesn't know where it's at, so it binds when it parks and won't work properly unless I pull it up. Don't really care if it doesn't work.
I had a good idea the switch in my column was still good (as I could hear the relay clicking) but I went ahead and put a new one in. Same problem, front wipers don't work. (I have a brand new multi-switch for sale if anyone is in need)
So the only logical conclusion I can draw is that there is a bad ground between the relay and the wiper motor. I don't really know where to look for this, so I guess it's going in the shop
