here's my issue... anti-theft monkey business is making starting my truck impossible to start until i luckily hit the right combination of buttons or wait it out.
here's my idea for a solution... since i can jump the solenoid with a screwdriver, why not just run some wires right from the solenoid up to a momentary "on" button mounted on the dash.
i don't have to worry about someone stealing it, and i don't mind having to turn the key and then hit the button.
1. electrically, how safe is this?
2. how many amps and volts should the button be rated for?
3. am i missing something obvious?
every now and then the system thinks i am stealing my car, so it won't let me start it. about half the time i can get out and hit lock-unlock-unlock-unlock on my fob and it will start. the other half of the time i have to wait 15 minutes or so.
I got the push button from Napa and ran 12awg wire (I think) and have been starting mine like that for 2 years with no trouble. Second Ford I have done this to. Easier than replacing a lock cylinder for sure.

After market or factory security system?
If after market, just bypass the starter kill relay.
If you want to add some safety to your added button, run it through the clutch switch. This will keep it from lurching forward and running someone down if you forget to push the clutch pedal in, and the tranny is in gear.

I've always wanted a push button start. I get tired of sticking keys in. The only problem is keeping others from driving off with my truck.
Eric, how do you like your 5 speed manual trans? Is the gear shift pattern tight? Do you use the overdrive? I've been thinking about getting a '91 F-250 with a 5 speed overdrive trans. It has a 460 that was built for towing a 30' fifthwheel so I'm worried about the 9 miles per gallon. I thought overdrive may help some.
The gear shift pattern in my old '65 F-250 (Borg Warner T-18) was so wide no one could sit in the middle. For second gear the gear shift was up against my right knee and in reverse it was almost against the passenger side door. How wide is your pattern?
I'll look into your push button solution for my next truck. Thank you for sharing it with us.
i like the 5 speed. first is a little low for traffic, and second is a little high though... so i never make it off the line much faster than a turtle in heat. shift pattern is fine- just tight enough. at the ****, it is about 6 or 7 inches between 1st to 5th. i don't think anyone would have fun riding in the middle seat though! good luck to ya.
My old T-18 had compound low for 1st so I never used that on the street. I had to come to a complete dead stop to shift out of granny. Second gear was like 1st gear in a truck 3 speed manual so off the standing stop I went 2nd, 3rd, 4th. Reverse was granny also.
I'll take a look at those push buttons this week. Thanks again.
