first off i got a 99 mazda b4000 4x4 and where the drive shaft comes out going to the rear diff it is leaking on the output seal. i was wondering if this is a big job to replace and what kind of oil does it take in there so i can fill her up and how much?
Spray some Pb blaster on that seal see if that makes it stop for temporary and change the fluid, It should take atf mercon III. Take out the plug and stick a Q-tip if it comes out red it's atf. If it hasn't been changed it is probably super thin it might be all you need is a change and it will stop leaking. You could try a few ounces of trans stop leak!
The rear seal is a piece of cake to change. ONce you unbolt the driveshaft and remove it from the t/c be sure to inspect the yoke for scarring. the seal is of the knock out knock in design. Only tools required are a good flathead screwdriver and a hammer.
If you don't have a drain plug( Square head) near the lower end of the case, you need to split the case. But why do that. Get a mity vac pump and suction it out! It is a great little tool for bleeding brakes, testing vacuum controlled components, partial tranny fluid changes, rear end fluid changes, power steering fluid changes and I always suction out the master cylinder and put fresh fluid there before bleeding brakes so you get fresh fluid throughout not a mix! If something isn't leaking instead of pulling it apart and putting a new gasket or rtv and risking leaks, as long as there isn't metal in the fluid just suction it out! When you refill the t case don't do it by amount you need to put vehicle on level surface and the fluid should be just below the fill plug hole stick your pinky through it should be like a 2-3 mm below the hole!
