i read in this forum that the 302 and 351/m heads would bolt up to the 351/W. my question is, since a 351/M is a destroked 400, which is a big block, then wouldnt a 460 heads fit on a 351/M? being that their both bigblocks. any help is much appriciated
"big block" and "small block" are STRICTLY chevy terms. no other auto builders engines fit into those categories; either by interchangability covering a wide range different displacements, or by the categorization provided by the manufacturer themselves, like Ford.
from the breakdown of the forums here you can see that the 400 and 460 are not of the same family, the breakdown of the forums is correct.
simple answer is NO, 460 heads will not fit on a 351M/400 block.
nope. Big block/small block is a GM term. The categories on this site are how Fords are classified. That said, Windsors such as the 302 and 351W in question have interchangeable heads. 351C, 351M, and 400 have interchangeable heads (335 series) 429 and 460 have interchangeable heads (385 series) Now yes a 351C/M/400 head will fit the 351W, but the coolant passages are different. They can be modded, and this classifies as a "Clevor" engine, but needs custom intake. the 400 started out as a Cleveland. Even some have the small bolt pattern. All that aside, big blocks in Ford circles are the FE engine family.
See, Gary, that's what happens when we're both busy typing, lol.
ok, im not saying yall are wrong, but why do they list the headers, intake, carbs, etc. as big ford and small ford in the summit books? just curious, thats why i called them big blocks. and what engine has a better flowing set of heads that will bolt up to the 351M? i want something to give it more power, but i dont want to spend hundreds of dollars on heads alone, a little bit more power will make me happy lol.
because summit is generally geared to selling to chevrolet crowds so their terms are mostly chevy terms.
if you dont want to spend hundreds of dollars on heads, you can not swap for anything better. do what everyone else does, swap cam/timing set and put a 4bbl and headers on it. it will be cheaper and more effective for gaining power.
i planned on putting an edlebrok intake and a 600 cfm carb and a set of headers. the cam was soon to come, but right now im buying the truck for 600 w/o tires haha, but i also have an 89 f150 i6 that is costing me in the gas department,so ill have to wait a check or 2 before i do stuff to it. its a 79 f100 4x4 BTW
i love the 89, perfect interior and all around good truck, my uncle gave it to me 2 years ago, im a senior in high school btw. and im going this weekend to sign both trucks over. i like the older body style and the availability of parts for it, but im looking for cheep easy ways to steal some extra power right now
haha, the seat in the 79 is pretty much gone. which altho off topic, but would a bench seat out of an 87 f150 fit in the 79? i have one, but not sure if it will fit. but i cant say that ill ever get rid of my 89. does anyone know of some simple things to do and get some more power, kinda on a budget lol
i was going to go get a set of headers for it next month, and my cousin has an 81 f250 ranger with the 351m that he built, hes gout about 11 grand in it, but he had to bend the header a little to get it to clear the frame, i didnt know if i would have the same problem
I kinda agree about the use of those terms being mostly chebby terms and they are kinda ambiguous for fords. I have given up on arguing the issue of the 351M/400 being called "big blocks" (which they are NOT). Ford only made one 351M/400, so there is no doubt which you are talking about, whatever you chose to call em.
HOWEVER--
The SVO catalog by ford, through several years of issue----havnt seen the latest! 289/302/351W/351C/351M/400 are all listed as "Small Block V8 Engines". 429/429CJ/429SCJ/429 Boss/460 are listed as "Big Block V8 Engines"
I dont know what they called the FE's, or for that matter, the old "Y" blocks in the SVO catalogs, if the catalog existed then. Going from 332 to 428 in size (I believe 272 to 312 for the "Y") could be confusing, except that all the weights were ~650# for the FE's
Not trying to argue . About the only thing I get tight about is when someone says the 400's are as big and heavy as the 460's !
