From Craigslist posts, to eBay auctions to newspaper classifieds, to performance autoparts stores to general guides from auto magazines describing these engines.
I think only Ford fans truly understand how it's catagorized in these forums.. or, uh, let me put it this way, people in this forum (who I consider the best <3 ) are the only ones who I've heard say "You don't call them Small/Big blocks if they're Fords"
Not that I've ever used "Small/Big block" myself.
yeah, the SVO catalog was F'd. probably published by some Petersen chevy spankers.

The 400 FMX block w/small bell did not jump to big block because of the 385 series bell. Most any argument for either has some exceptions. The bore spacing from 221 to 400 is 4.380. Little doubt that the 221 was a small block with small cubes. From there to the 400, the deck ht was about the only change. Just where it lost its classification as a small block (if it did) cannot be determined. The cubes went from small to Mid (certainly not big cubes, by todays standards).
For me, I have no problem, because it is very ambiguous. Just dont tell me the 400 is heavy as a 385 series. The cubes cannot be the determining factor, if so, a 370 truck engine might be a mid-sized small block!! How about a 332 FE as a small block? Its smaller than the 351W/C.
Except for the fun of it, this discussion cant be won by anyone. But then, what better reason to argue the point
