Need air filter advise f 350 7.3 2002 mbrp dual exhaust and gauges other wise it is stock it has an air raid box in place of the stock one, want to replace present air filter with the best one out there .I have read the threads all day today and still not sure what to get I am leaning toward the ais am still new to the diesel world .learning every day this site helped me a lot the folks here know their stuff .any advise would help ,I do want to keep the intake box will be doing the doo dad thing next week thanks in advance
There is an abundance of folks who love the 6637, and it has had some excellent 3rd party reviews in terms of filtering effectiveness. It is also simple and very cost-effective. If you want to get teh absolute best filterring possible, the AIS modified system for the 7.3 has the highest ratings, but it is costly.
Concerning the K&N, they seem to have a few folks who like them, but most folks end up changing over to either the 6637, AFE, or AIS systems. I think that there is only one K&N setup that actually has good filtration efficiencies on our turbo-charged diesel engines... most seem to let in too much dirt whihc end sup showing up in high silicone numbers in used oil analaysis and/or in dusted turbo blades, which end sup requiring turbo repairs that would have otherwise (with good filtration) been unnecessary.
Barry... the best way to check to see if your K&N is doing what it should is to take off the turbo intake tube and swipe a clean finger around the inside tube surface... if your finger comes out dirty, you need to either resolve the leaking K&N or replace it altogether with a different system, which is what most folks have done when they see the dirty finger test on their own tube. Then again, you may have that one setup that works well, not knowing which you're using and I can't remember the name of the "good" one (FIPK, I think).
That unit looks good, Chris, but $98 still makes it a little costly. I went to the Powercore website and did some looking, and it seems that they only have the Powercore filter systems for the gas engines (5.4L or 6.8L).
I chucked my K&N that went into my stock filter box and went fot the AIS. It was easy to install and I do not get the "drone" when I tow my fiver that I would get with the 6637. If I did not tow I would try the 6637 just because everyone on this thread has such great luck with this mod.
Locopower, since you have had both systems, 6637 and now AIS. How do they compare power wise? Is there any noticable difference in throttle response, power or fuel economy between them? Just curious because I am going to be running the 6637 which I just picked up today and am saving for the AIS in the future.

I can answer that question because I have both systems as well.
The reason that I wanted to know is I tow rather heavy and the EGT was climbing too high on anything but stock tunes while pulling hills.
So I removed my AIS and reinstalled the 6637 and headed out with Tow/Haul tune loaded.
What I found is that it made no difference which filter I ran with.
They both breath equally well for my application, there is no change in EGT when pulling a hill.
I am going to put the AIS back in because it is a lot quieter operation. It doesn't completly muffle the intake whistle and that for me is a good thing because I like to hear the turbo sing. But it makes the difference between having to shout back and forth and talk normally. When you are driving all day long to a vacation destination, that is a huge difference.
Thanks for the reply Dan, I haven't tested the 6637 yet due to my truck still being apart for various PMS applications right now. But you say that the truck is much louder with the 6637 than the AIS inside. That is good to know.
I have not had the 6637 on my truck, I decided on the AIS after what I read on this forum. Sorry if I caused a misunderstanding. I would try the 6637 if I did not tow, I am thinking of doing the Zoo Dad mod but with some kind of bug screen.
