OK, so I was finally able to get a power steering box out of a toyota, in fact I got two from the same place in case one isn't good (It was a long drive) and I started to get them cleaned up last night and I couldn't get the Pitman arm off. I got the nut and lock washer off but it just won't come. I oiled it up with marvel mystery oil last night and I just tried agian and I can't get it! Is there something that I should be doing that I don't know about??? I don't want to hit it with a hammer too hard and break some seals or something inside, and the same goes for heating it.
Mainly what have you guys done???
Also has anyone used a steering column out of a 67 or 68 Cougar?? I have one in my garage and I think I'm going to try it unless I see a different one in the next couple weeks that catches my eye. I looked in past threads and the Cherokee came up so I'll look at one of those in the junkyard to check it out.
I used a pitman arm puller to remove the stock pitman arm from my 52. You probably need the same thing. You should eb able to get one anyplace that sells automotive tools.
It is a tight fit. I heated mine cause I was planning to rebuild it anyway. Others have used a pitman arm puller, you may be able to rent or borrow one from a local parts shop.
I split mine with a cutoff wheel as deep as I could, then finished cracking it with a cold chisel. I had to do the same with the shaft nut to get it off. I think they have Godzilla working at the factory between movies.
i broke two pitman arm puller's on mine before i took it to work and put it in a 50 ton press that the medal shop has.after 15 ton's of pressure and a little heat it came off.
Most of the local parts stores have a tool rental program. Head over to your local parts store and rent a pitman arm puller. When I did mine I took my box with me, I used their tool in the parking lot and was able to return their tool in a matter of minutes.
AutoZone will loan you a pitman arm puller - you put down a deposit and they give it back when you return the tool. A proper puller will make the job much easier but be prepared...as was mentioned earlier, I believe Godzilla put mine on and you have to be determined to get it off - wouldn't have made it without the right tool.

This is exactly what I did. I actually found a pitman arm puller at work today and borrowed it over lunch but couldn't get a good grip on it so I cut it and hit it with a C.C. and it popped right off, just way too easy of a solution.
Now I have to do some checking but it looks like my 68 Cougar column is a little long so thats good, it can be trimmed. I am also going to see if I can find a steering U-joint at the local Old machine supply store (they can get almost anything, I haven't stumped them yet) More importantly I have to make some more money so I can go get my new pitman arm and U-joint and get this thing together and drive it. This whole college thing just costs WAY TOO much.

Borgeson makes U joints with the correct Toy spline and any other end combo you might need. Column length depends on what wheel you're using and what arm/seat position is most comfortable. Test it to be sure before cutting. Mine ended up being 30".
