doe sanybody know where I can get a print out of the parts list inside my tranasfer case. I have a 88 f150 but I do not know the model of transfer case.
The manual i have does not show the expanded view. If somebody has a image that shows the expnaded view please let me know.
I want to split the case to find out why it won't stay in 2H and I am not sure if splitting the case will result in disaster by peices be sprung out a tme. Is it safe to split the case for a novice? Or do I hav eto take it to somebody with this knowledge?
Does the transfer case have a whining noise to it? The reason I ask is because I had an 89 (it was a Borg-Warner 1356), that wouldn't stay in 4Hi. Come to find out it was a stretched out chain. I split it without any special tools and replaced the chain. The hardest part was putting the 2 gears in that the chain rotates around. The trick is to get them both kindof started and then pound on them both a rubber mallet. There are a couple of small pieces in there, but self explanatory. It's not really too big of a job. Hope that helps.
that helps a little. there is no whining noise, it just popes out of 2H when I start coasting. The problem is that when it pops out it goes between 2H and 4H which is like a neutral and then it makes a tremendous noise with the gears hitting each other. I will get the model tonight when I pick it up and bring it home.
I (a novice) competely dissembled and assembled my transfer case a few weeks ago. No special tools or training are required. You might have worn the plastic tabs off of the shift fork, a common problem in these transfer cases. Handyman43358 (Chad) made a good little writeup about the steps to take on the following thread:
Haha! As much as I do call Andy for advice (sorry Andy), I actually never called him on that little project. I had Chad (handyman43358) on speed dial. He's a young guy about my age with a WEALTH of automotive knowledge.
Somehow I hit the wrong key and the above entry was posted, incomplete. Here is the website for the oil pump issue. It's a really common problem when you hit that 150,000 mile button. Mine trashed on a trip to Detroit pulling a loaded goose neck.
I fixed mine by drilling a 1/4 in hole thru the case to anchor the new pump. Much simpler than welding on the magnesium case. Silicone around the bolt made a permanent fix. The hole will be above the oil level in the case. While the case is apart, deal with the shift selector plate pivot. in the early nineties an improvement was made to keep the plate from wobbling all around.
ok, I seem to have hit a road block. I do have a 1356 and I have the tailhousing off. now, I got the yellow speedometer gear in the way, how does that come off? i cannot pull the case apart with this in the way? Is it on splines and I can just pull it off? Does it twist off? So far it doesn't move either way I try.
The bottom fork was not bent, good news, but it was broke.. bad news. One side of the fork was broke and the other side was bent up. Now, I seen my oil-pump and it looks good and stationary. All is well with that. But the other end was broke off the clip that was holding it.
If you look at this illustration I can tell you the number of the piece that is broke. I first got the case off and I seen part #26 (bottom image) all the way over on the opposite side of the case under the chain. Then the hose was off of #25. Now, half of that #26 piece is still on #25 so do I have to replace it? I might as well since it is off cause that bearing #25 doesn't move all to well so I may replace that one as well. So a fork and a bearing and hose, not bad.
