Well, I don't mind wearin' a little transmission fluid. lol! I assume this is a good time to do a transmission oil change too? I noticed that we are not supposed to use Mercon V, and I was thinking of switching to synthetic, but it seems that the synthetic is a replacement for all transmission fluids. Is this going to negatively affect my transmission? Is there a recommended synthetic ATF for the 4R100?
Thanks
mercon V is the new replacment for our trans and is good to use.
Just remember. NO Instructions come with it because he wants you to call him. He has drilled out some holes to set the shift the way you tell him. He will tell you which hole controls what shift and if you want that shift firmer, he will tell you how much to drill it out. So, get a photocopy of the shift plate and make markings.
Right on, will do. I probably won't do it until I get a deeper pan. Don't want to drop the pan twice.
I don't think BTS recommends a deeper pan although they will install one if you send it to them. They recommend the 6.0 cooler. In stock programs on my F5 tuner, I see about 50 deg above ambient (90 deg) with their trans and the 6.0 cooler. It is about 65 above ambient with the tunes because I can't keep my foot out of it.
Why do you want the bigger pan anyways? More fluid to cool down and put into the trans.
I have heard from a few people at work that if you have more fluid it won't heat up as bad. I want to run 35's and get the DP Tuner without having to buy a new tranny down the road. I also want to pull a toy hauler in the future. I have just heard the bad stories about the 4r100.

More fluid means it takes longer to heat up. That is the good part. More fluid means it takes longer to cool down, that is the bad part.
So does the bad part outweigh the good part? I won't waste the money on a new pan if it's not worth it. I am definately getting the 6.0 cooler though. Thanks for the help everyone!

Well, more mass means it takes longer to heat up. However, the amount of heat energy going into the fluid is constant. The trans gets up to temp somehow. However, if you are in a colder climate, it takes longer. Something to consider. Yes, the larger pan gives more surface area. However, I don't think it gives that much more to compensate for the increase in fluid quantity. IMO, best spend your money elsewhere.
As someone pointed out once, why did they put a cooler in the truck when they can achieve the same or better result with a deeper pan? IMO, they cannot and so they put the cooler on. The cooler involves hoses and another part. The pan involves sticking a larger one on.
That makes sense, plus I have yet to see a post regarding a deeper tranny pan, there must be a reason for that. I'll do the cooler and the valve body and if it goes south I'll hit BTS up for a new tranny. Thanks again for your help.

If you want a fast easy fix, yes. You will also notice it takes longer to heat up your trans so you will be happy. However, if I am not racing, I would probably look for better ways to do it.
