I was told it would stiffen up the shifts reducing wear and slipage at shifts. I am looking at adding the jwvb during my upcoming tranny service as well.

With my stock tranny it made all the difference in the world in how it shifted. One of my favorite mods until I swapped in the full John Wood trans. Riffraff Diesel: John Wood 4R100 Valve Body
I have the BTS valvebody and I am verry happy with the quicker/ firmer shifts it provides. It can also be adjusted for even firmer shifts by enlarging the holes in the plate.
I installed a Factory Tech valve body before I got tunes, and the 3-4 shift was pretty harsh. When lifting off the go pedal at the same time it got really effing harsh. Which happened every day on a certain hill near my house. Otherwise the shifts were quick and firm, felt hugely better when towing. The DP tunes mellowed out the 3-4 shift nicely. People always rave about the power with tunes, but the revised trans tuning is at least as important IMO
The John Wood valve body transformed my transmission (at 90k miles) from slushy to brand-new. Best mod I have done so far. Sorry I waited a year to do it. Easy but messy.
