if it is stuck on then yes. to test the relay get a 12 volt test light, there are 2 large gauge wires on it, key off only one should be hot, key on both should be hot for a little bit

It's about 104 degrees amd I don't have any help here is what I have done.

My relay is a little different that the one in the pix. Mine sits upright whith two (2) large terminals on the top. One of these terminals is always "Hot"
the other has a "Yoke" attached to it and to each of the yokes ears there are two (2) wires each that as of this writing, I assume run to the glow plugs on each side of the engine.

There are two (2) other smaller terminals that I assume one of which comes from the ignition and the other???????

So....what I have learned so far is that when I turn on the ignition the terminal with the yoke becomes hot and it stays hot. In my past experiences with relays is that this is not right. One would think that if the power to the relay does not open at some predetermined time then the end result would be: "Burned Out Glow Plugs"

Altho I am not in a position to hear the relay click it is obvious that it is making a conection.

If I recall, is there not a unit, a PCM that controls the duration of the GPR? Where is this little guy located and is there a test proceedure for it?

Roger

yours looks different because tj has a different aftermarket styled relay, yours is stock. it should not stay hot for more than 2.5 minutes, start the truck as normal with the test light in place, it should go out, if it stays on constantly then it is sticking but i would be willing to bet that it will go out. yes the pcm controls relay on\off and on time, it bases that time on engine oil temp, intake air temp. it is located behind the e-brake, you can see the connector if you look at the firewall next to the brake booster, 104 pin rectangular connector

Thanks Joe, I'll fire the Old Red Rooster up and wait to see what happens.
21/2 minute seems like a long time. Maybe I'm just being overly protective, I just don't want to burn anything up.

Well, here goes.

2 and a half is longest allowed by the pcm, that would only be in extreme cold, this time of year in heat should normally be around 10-20 seconds of on-time

Well Joe, ya did it again. That relay shut off between 40-45 seconds. I have tried it five (5) times. Damn, I feel like the little boy who cried wolf. I probably never had a problem in the first place, I probably just never noticed the volt meter displaying that lag before. But I still have to keep a close watch to ascertain why I ended up with dead batteries after my vacation run.

I for one am grateful that you and all of the others are out there, what a fascinating group of experiance that is willing to share.

Thank you,
Roger

In our trucks the alternator will not charge for the first 40 seconds whether the glow plugs are hot or not. its controlled by the PCM and its programmed to not charge for the first 40 seconds after start-up. Everything is good to go in your truck.

Tim, I didn't know that. Always thought the GP's were pulling all the juice from the alternator right after start up and that's why the volt meter register low. Makes sense though, probably saves wear and tear on the alternator.

There is also the possibility that the GPR got wet and shorted out until it dried. Kind of a longshot but it is a possibility. That could explain the battery drain.
