cat questions
lol thanks I'm going to call the shop were I got my exhaust done and see what they have to say. Any one no were a diagram of some sort is that shows the exhaust? Ive been tryn to find one and havnt had much luck.
As many know, emission regulations and enforcement varies from state to state, the Peoples Republik of California is purported to being one of the most strict.
My 88 Mustang LX 5.0 does indeed have 4 cats in the system. There is also an off road "H" pipe replacement for the cats which does have welded fittings for the O2 sensors.
Opening up your exhaust has always been a viable means of increasing performance and mileage. When I was a youth we took our cars to muffler shops where all the systems were custom formed and welded to the vehicles. We didn't have bolt/clamp on system components per say.
My Mustang needed two of the cats to be replaced which was done by a local shop. they just cut out the old ones and welded in new.
Seems to me that you should have a number of options with the exhaust. You should be able to find an after market bolt on performance cat system, or you could find a good muffler shop to build you a custom system with larger tubes and higher flow cats. The second option will allow you more flexibility and depending on the shop might even be cheaper.
personally, I've always been a fan of dual exhaust (twice pipes!) I love the sound of a good open system with the old Hemi Turbo mufflers.
The bottom line is, if your factory exhaust came with 4 cats your new system should probably have 4. A good muffler pro in your area should be able to advise you there on what will be accepted as legal. Some areas are so strict as to deny any modifications.
