1997 4.0 spark plug wire routing

I recently purchased a 1997 Ranger with the 4.0 and am in the process of replacing the spark plugs and wires. I have the factory service manual (covers ranger and aerostar) which has a diagram for routing the plug wires. However the wires currently on the driver side (4,6 & 5) pass under the middle of the intake manifold (between the 2 & 3 in the top picture) rather than around the outside of the engine and clips 1,11 & 9 are missing. I tried routing the new wires around the engine like in the picture but the #2 wire is too short (bosch part# 09785) even though, it is supposed to be the correct wire set for this application. Can anyone comment on which way the wires are actually supposed to be routed? The wires I removed are grey, individually numbered and have "B7028 4F6 HF" labeled on them, anyone know if these are OEM? Also, after reviewing the paperwork that came with the truck I discovered the intake manifold gasket was changed so it is possible the shop rerouted the wires at that time. Thanks.

That's one of the problems with not using OEM replacement (Motorcraft) wires. Some aftermarket wiresets may be as good quality-wise, but you often end up with with a few that are either too long or too short.

Sounds like the wires you are replacing are the originals (or Motorcrafts).
