Choke??

Me and a buddy just rebuilt the carb on my 85 F150 4.9 six and it is running great except that the choke doesn't seem to work properly. Does anyone know how to adjust it?
Thanks in advance...

Is it not opening or not closing? Is your electrical wire connected and does it actually have voltage when the motor is running? Is your choke heat tube connected?

Is it a Manual or Automatic Choke?

Ranger GT2, it seems to be opening too early, yes, and yes...
Col Flashman, it is Automatic.

You may want to check where the index mark is on the choke cap. It may need to be adjusted a little more rich. It probably won't stay on very long when the weather is warm.

That's the problem, I can't figure out how to adjust it??? I loosened the screws (3) around the cap, but it won't spin because there is a hole on the bottom where a tube recesses and then there is a tab at the top that seems to prevent it from spinning? I am seriously thinking about just installing a manual choke and being done with it... runs great when it is finally warm.

I'll try and post a picture of how the cap is located in relationship to the metal tab in the choke houseing itself.

I'll try and explain how to do this.

With the cap off, notice the spring with the end that is bent out towards the cap. The bent out part goes to the right of the metal tab that sticks out of the choke housing. With the cap placed over the choke housing, place the retaining ring and 3 screws back into place. Do not fully tighten the screws, leave them loose enough so that you can still turn the cap. Turn the cap counterclockwise. As you do the choke will start to close if the temp. is not to high. The outside of the cap should have a mark on it and the chock housing should have a number of marks on it also. Put the cap mark in the middle of the marks on the choke housing. That should get you pretty close to were you need to be.

Thank you for the great illustration and explaination, but my choke is similar but the difference is on the cap with the spring there is a notch and on the plastic cover there is a tab that fits into that notch so when the cap is placed on the choke housing you cannot turn the cap and this is why I thought there is a trick or something... I am starting to think that I may need to grind the tab down so that I can force the ability to adjust it... what do you think?

I'd go out & purchase a new one & not screw around w/ the P.O.'s F.U.B.A.R.
