Hey guys, do yall think I can tow this up a hill with my truck... http://www.tucsonrv.com/1997_aerolit...ailer_25rb.jpg
My mother-in-law and my papa-in-law say that my truck doesn't have enough power. My mother-in-law uses a dad gum trition v10 excursion to haul it...
I got a standard m5od trnasmission, no cats, and a flowmaster muffler for mods...
Can I tow it up on the Mississippi bridge?
Do yall guys think I can tow, or is she wrong?
I've done it (once). You have to really feather the clutch. Once you're rolling, just use the gears (absolutely no 5th). Don't park uphill or you're screwed. I wouldn't do it for anything other than a transfer of locations.
Yeah man, they were giving me a hard time, saying "you can't, not enough power" I just clinch my teeth and say "your wrong It "can" "...
Why is that alot of people think that inline 6 has no power? I don't understand... have anyone under estimated the power of the inline 6 and was proven wrong?
I do not have enough experience to tell you yes or no. But I would say DO IT; prove'em wrong so you can add another story to the "Are 300 six's good pulling motors?" thread.
Don't misunderstand....the 300 doesn't have alot of power. It's strength is it offers good torque at a very low rpm...which is what you want to get it rolling. All the other Ford engines will match or beat the 300's torque but at higher rpms.
It reminds me of the Spring of 1983....ordered my truck from my local Ford dealer here in TEXAS (the home of big trucks), with the 300 and 4 spd OD.
The a**hole salesman said .."You won't have enough power to pull anything!".
Fast forward...2007: He's long dead and my truck keeps pullin'!
Well, guys I don't beleive her... I beleive it can put just have to keep the motor in the torque band. I driven a chevy 5.3 liter vortec, it can't spin the tires and throw your head back like the Mule inline 6.
I can put my truck and first gear and let it ride at 5 mph and stomp on the gas all the way to the floor and peal out while my head bangs against the seat. I did it with that chevy even though it was a automatic and it just didn't bang my head like my truck did. But man when my truck peel out it KEEPS going until It throw a rod, only if I let it. Yall guys, enjoy yall trucks, because I believe the 6 is a mule, she "silent but deadly" you can't make her loud like thouse v8's but she got some meat and she lasts along time. I like her, I am just thinking about putting a silent muffler on my truck because I'm tired of the sound.
I herd someone said use diesel muffler, whats up with that?
it really depends on your axle gearing. i think those trailers are fairly light, around 3000 pounds maybe 4000. if you have 3.55 axles gears or higher it should do it absolutly. it will take some clutch feathering tho if your starting on a hill. with 3.08's it wil be rough. the problem will not be with engine torque. it will be, will you burn the clutch up to pull thru a tall gear starting off.
You have plenty of power, in fact if you had a four cylinder or even a two cylinder you could pull it up the hill.
Of course, and I am not trying to be a smart A here, but it all depends upon how FAST you want to go up the hill. The two cylinder with the right gears might mean 5 mph or less, but it wil pull it up the hill. We do it all the time with small four cylinder forklifts.
And I will add - as previously mentioned - you may destroy the clutch doing so if you have to slip it to get the load moving. The secret here is to avoid starting and stopping on the hill. Get the load moving and just pull right up the hill you are in. momentum really helps!
I for one do not understandand this mentality that it is so bad to slow down for a hill. So what, you can catch back up on the downhill and save a bit of fuel overall. But then I carry a commercial license as well, so maybe I am used to slowing down. Even with a 550hp cat and 10 speed RR, if the hill is longe enough I eventualy have to back off to keep the exhaust from overheating.
How heavy loaded? Remined my of a great movie of Ricky and Lucy, The Long, Long Trailer. Ricky shops for a tow rig and gets the most powerfull motor he can get to tow the long trailer. He gets on this mountain pass and is really working the motor and he can't understand why. He finds out Lucy is starting a rock collection that Ricky does not know about. I key rumba.
