Hi, on our 02 Excursion, the brake lights in the tail light housings do not work, but the third brakelight up above does work. The blinkers work. All the fuses under the dash have been checked out. I checked the 5 wires going into the brakeklight switch. 2 are hot all the time, 2 others are hot only when the brake pedal is depressed.
What should I check next?
Thanks, Joel

Tilt the steering wheel, and see if they start working. If they do, then you have a wiring plug in the column that has too much strain on it, and is making a bad connection. If that doesn't fix it, I suspect your multi-function switch may be bad.
Since your third brake light is working, that means everything down at the pedal switch is ok. The rear brake lights go through the turnsignal switch (multi-function switch).
I checked the connections on the turnsignal switch and they were OK, so I replaced the turn signal switch. That was it! The brake lights all work fine now. Thanks!
