Question 6.0 erratic idling

Tonight I was sitting at a redlight when my truck started to rev up and cut out. It's hard to explain but it had a mind of its own. My foot was nowhere near the throttle but it was like it was trying to rev up but a rev limiter was cutting it back (not very high rpm). I have an 04 FX4 cc with a superchips flashpaq set on performance. I pulled over and returned the truck to stock program and the problem went away. I had been wanting to trade the flashpaq in for an sct, maybe now is the time. Could this be tuner related or just a coincidence that the stock tune fixed it?

well, it went away when you set it back to stock... could be a corrupt file. how long have you had the performance tune in it ?? do you have different tunes you could try other than the one that was loaded ?
try loading the tune and see if it does it again.
we need to eliminate possibilities in order to pinpoint your problem.

I was taking my wife to dinner so I didn't have time to troubleshoot, I was glad I wasn't having to call for a tow. I have been running the performance tune for a couple of weeks to see how it does on fuel milage. I ran the economy for a while with no issues. Earlier this week with the performance tune loaded, it revved up one time while driving without throttle input, but went right away. In the morning I will experiment with the different tunes to see if it does it any more.

It's likely your ICP sensor... Myself and many others with 04's have experienced this lately.

I vote ICP sensor too. The gentleman in this thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...ode-p0601.html had the same problem. See if his symptoms match yours.

I read the thread that npccpartsman referenced, and it did sound a lot like the problem I had except for the cold startup issues. What were your symptoms LiftedBlackHD? Where is the ICP sensor located and is it expensive? Thanks for the help.

My syptoms were eratic idle. The idle would jump up and down between 400-900 rpm. ocassionally while driving I would feel a surge. Like I touched the go pedal but I didnt.

I had a similar issue on a gasser. Turned out it was the IAC (Idle Air Control). Nothing was more freakier than sitting at a red light with ur car lunging forward, out of ur control.

The ICP sensor could also be related to your cold start issue since it's injector related. Depending on the year model of your truck it's either located under the turbo on 03 and early 04 models or on the passenger front of the valve cover. The flashpaq has been known to cause some ICP sensor problems and since your symptoms disappeared when you returned it to stock maybe the tuner was magnifying it. Can't you read DTC codes with the flashpaq also? That might be something to check for.

My symptoms were just like what LiftedBlackHD described except, when it began to idle up and down quickly, it wouldn't stop even after I shut the truck off and restarted a couple of times, it only stopped after changing the program. The only code that registed was the KAM from changing the program and there was another fault that didn't register a code, it said it requred the vehicle to run more. Saturday I loaded the flashpaq performance program and drove around for a while with no issues. I then changed back to stock and I will drive it like that for a week or two to see if I get any surging without the tuner. I will probably go ahead and buy an ICP sensor to keep on hand fir if/when it goes totally bad. Anyone know the part #?

An 04 could be two different ones depending on production date/location on the motor. Either it's on the passenger side top front of the valve cover or under the turbo. Look on the production tag inside the drivers door frame and get the production date off that tag. It will help tremendously.

Manufacture date is 02/04 and it looks like I have the newer version with the ICP sensor located at the front of the right valve cover.

I had the ICP Sesor go bad on my 03. I was ging to fix it my self, but could not get to it. I started to have suges at idle and at Stop Lights. I stalled at stop lights and would be hard to restart. I was running an Edge Juice at the time and that probably magnified the problem. I showed the code for ICP Sensor, P2285. Took it to the dealer, they did not see that code, told me the EGR valve was disconnected and the fuel system neede cleaned. 2 days later, I took it back to the dealer and told them what I wanted fixed, the ICP Sensor replaced, and thats all. They did that and that solved the problems. If I was not such a big guy, I could have done that my self. My big hands just would not fit.

Greg
