I've been trying to figure out why my truck keeps stalling at startup. Tonight I got a chance to begin troubleshooting. I tried to start the truck, it started and idled at about 1000 RPM for 2 seconds then cut out.
I noticed that if I left the keys in the "on" position and just sat there the power to everything would cut on and off on its own instead of remaining steady on, the dash lights, radio, odometer, fuel injectors, everything. The engine had already cut off and i was just sitting there with the keys still in the on position, the radio would cut on, then off, then on for a second, then off for two or three seconds. I got out and went to the engine bay and I could hear power clicking on an off there as well. It did this for about a minute and a half, then the power stayed on constantly as it should. I started the truck and presto...it ran like a top.
So, something is causing my electrical power to blink on and off occasionally at startup. I've actually had it happen a few times as I was driving down the road.
Sounds like a possible GEM module problem. Inspect behind the fuse panel area for signs of a water leak. Sometimes a small windshield leak can corrode things in the GEM module.
This morning I started by checking for corroded battery terminals, bad ground wire connections etc. What I found was that the connector that goes from my battery to my solenoid has been melting!
I don't know for sure that this is THE problem that I've been experiencing but it certainly is A problem.
Anyone know what might be causing this? The pics below show the part in question. The wire leaving the bottom post to the right goes to the alternator.
