Need shaving advice quickly!

Theres a party tonight thats going to have a few girls there that i would like to impress. I have this scrubby beard that needs to go, its not very thick though. Problem is everytime i shave i get whats referred to as a "zit beard." It only happens on the right side of my neck where there is some facial hair. It dosnt happen too bad typically, but its not exactly attractive.

What i usually do is buzz off the beard with an electric shaver. Then i go over it with the razor. I typically go with the grain about twice, then just kinda check for anywhere i may have missed. But everytime on that same part of my neck i get those zits from shaving. What can i do? The party is in about 5hrs so help me out fellas!

Get your self the fusion razor, and make sure your face is completely warm and moist. I use gel shaving cream, only because I can work it in, instead of just sliding it over your face. Don't press hard, and you should be okay

Only let 'em see the left side. Seriously, sounds like you have the same problem I do. The whiskers don't grow straight out but at an angle, right? so you have to shave closer than normal guys do. Wait..I mean "than guys normally do." I, too, do the electric thing then shave with a blade, but dry shave. And you have to go against the grain. And use a new sharp blade. Afterward I use witch hazel liberally. It's more medicinal than regular aftershave. Also, helping those gals get their swerve on is beneficial. Don't hurt 'em.

rinsing the razor with cold water instead of hot seems to help me get a closer shave with less burn.

The blade makes a huge difference too. I find the Sensor and and Mach 3 to be equally effective without razor burn. Take a hot shower first. Wetting my face and waiting 5 minutes doesn't work. Ever see those old movies where people would have the hot wet towel put on their face before they shaved? There's a reason for that! Rinse with cold water, it closes the pores up after the blade passes.

Sounds like you have pseudofollicular barbae (PFB) which I know from experience is a son of a gun.

I only shave in the shower when I am almost done. Believe it or not, I get my best shaves using a cheapo throwaway twin blade (once and done) and then follow it up with the Mach 3 battery powered razor. Like was said earlier, let your face get nice and hot and let the pores open. Shaving gel works good but I use plain old soap with plenty of hot water and only after I have been in the shower for a while.

If I shave like most people, I get horrible beard bumps (PFB). Shaving in the shower or letting the beard grow out are the only good solutions for me.

I don't have this problem but the usual advice is wash your face with HOT soapy water. Try to leave the hot soap on your face for awhile. Rinse, maybe repeat etc. The longer you can let your face get hot soapy water, the softer your beard will be and the more your pores will open.

Then use a fresh razor. The twins work good for me and the triples and fours etc. I don't really notice a big difference between blades. The soaking and soap and new blade are what make the shave smooth.

I like gels but regular foam works fine too. You do NOT need much, just enough that your skin is slick. No inch thick foam, no benefit and a waste.

Maybe not for you, but I shave with the grain, against and sideways. In other words for my beard, left right up down. I have read going against the grain irritates the skin and causes razor burn so avoid this unless your face is used to it. I am told I could grate cheese with my beard so it really pays to be soaped up

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

You guys are so lucky. I'm 19 and still only have to shave once a week! Cold water works better than hot because it makes the hair stand up on end, or atleast thats what I think.

Lucky? I'd settle for never shaving again. If it wasn't for the Air Force and the wife, I'd look like the dude from ZZ Top....

Besides, lucky is being 19 and doing things with the girlfriend that are only fond memories for us old folks.....

Why not just stop after the electric? Party, dim lights - if a girl gets close enough to notice the minute stubble an electric leaves, then odds are high you're past the first impression stage. And at your age, personally, I looked baby-faced enough that cheeks smooth as a baby's bottom were in fact undesirable...

I have long held a theory that rinsing the blade with cold water helps the blade last longer. I don't know if there is any truth to that, or if it's just an impression I have.

NEVER let a lady friend get ahold of your razor though - that's a dang fact! Leg hair on even the sweetest creature on this earth will turn a double edge razor into a rip/crosscut eight point meataxe in just one application...

Sounds to me like the problem is when you don't HAVE a beard. Why not just use an electric razor, or put a one eigth inch comb on a set of hair clippers and trim it to an eigth or quarter inch until it fills in?

I used to get bumps after shaving until I started using an aftershave that is alcohol based. I use mennen green. I like the smell anyway and no more bumps after shaving.
By the way if you knick yourself its gonna burn like hell.

No advice here. I normally just splash water on my face and trim around my goatee and than slather shaving gel all over than drag the razor across my face. Last time I nicked myself was after my wife used my blade and I tried to shave after. No bumps, no burn, no problem. I only get burn when I shave 2 days in a row. When at home I shave every 3 days, when at work I shave the morning I leave the house to come to work and the morning I return home from work (1 week).
