Water Pump Took A Crap

Well, it looks like I'll be changing the water pump on my wife's Ex. It took a crap last week just after she arrived at work.

I've already ordered the coolant bypass filter system from Dieselsite, as well as the billet thermo housing and 203 degree thermo.

I'm also going to take this opportunity to swap out my coolant for an ELC coolant. Probably Fleetrite HD ELC, since there is an IH dealership nearby, and because none of the Chevron Petroleum outlets near me carry the full strength Delo ELC, just the 50/50 mix.

I might do a little preventive maintenance while I'm in there and change the serpentine belt and a hose or two.

I replaced the serpentine and idler, along with the water pump, thermostat, housing and coolant. I stuck with the green stuff. The hardest part was removing the pump, because I couldn't break the fan free, so it had to come out as a unit. I used cardboard to protect the radiator. I took the pump over to the local International Truck repair facility and they removed the fan for me. After that, it was a piece of cake. Good luck.

Thanks!

I've read where some guys have had no problems removing the fan, and other could only do so after removing as a unit (like you did) and then they used a vise to break the nut free.

If I have to, I'll use an air chisel to get the darn thing off!

I'm curious, why did you replace the idler? I read other posts where guys did the same thing, but I don't understand why.

It's a common practice to replace the idlers on the Gen 2 Lightnings, but that's usually because usually we (L owners) are going up in size (from the stock 90mm to the oversized 100mm) to help deter belt slip on the supercharger, but I don't see a need for the Excursion.

Was your idler fubar'd?

Idler replacement is a good idea. You already have the belt off and these things have been known to fail at the most inopurtune times. I see it as cheap insurance.
