If your vin code has a Y as the forth digit, example F25Y &^%$&^$.
thats one way of identifyning, Or if you have previous experince
with these motors stomp on it and see what happens, Or
get a straight, very firm object( wooden dowel, piece of wire, nothing to thick as the plughole is slanted), and a sharp something to mark your object.
take out #1 plug,it's closest plug to the front on passenger side.
turn your timing wheel to TDC,
insert your dowel or other object at the same angle as the cylinder
bore to get most accurate measurement, once you hit the piston,
take your sharp object and make a mark on you measuring thing where
it sticks out the plug hole.
rotate the engine with the dowel in the hole, watch the measurer
go down once untill it hits BDC, make another mark on your measurer
where it pokes out the hole.
Measure the difference between the marks you made, 3.5" would
mean a 360,3.78" would mean a 390. The shorter your readings are, the
more accurate they are. I tried this before and my 360 had a 4" stroke, but I tried it some more and I got a 3.5" reading, damn!
I'll give the dowl trick a try. I have a 360 in the truck according to the VIN. But I'm looking at a 390 to go in it. The VIN for the truck it is in said it was a 6 cylinder. OOPS. That's why I need to make sure what it is before I buy it. Thanks for the help

390 is the same thing as 360 except for crank and piston pin height.
Longer bore in the 390
Of course, if you are looking for a complete 390, then you need the crank, but if you just need to replace a hogged-out block, then the 360 is the same block.
