the middle pulley on the driver side of the engine is making some noise I believe it is only a guide ,but I would like to replace it anyway. It looks like all that holds it on are 3 bolts maybe 3/8" size any input appreciated
Thanks Tom
If your belt has any ag at all on it, it could possibly be squeeking. Take the belt off and spin the pulley to be sure. Try a new belt first since you will probably be getting one anyway.
I agree I thought me bearings were shot in something, but turns out I replaced the belt and presto no noise. I would definatly try the belt first. I like the new gator belts from Goodyear.
I have replaced the belt and it still sounds like their is a mouse stuck behind the pulley if I hit the back of the pulley with WD40 the squeaking stops for a min. then returns
Hey Caseydudem, where did you get the Goodyear belt....I mean....what parts house? NAPA, Autozone,.......
Mo
I believe it was bought at Checkers auto store, but I had to have my dad buy and send it to me out here in germany. I would assume that napa and autozone carry it also, but it is more expensive then the other brands. the belt cost me almost forty dollars.

That does sound like it might need to be replaced, but I dont think wd-40 is the best to put on a bearing anyway. It just tends to fly off and sooner or later the its dry again, but I'm still trying to figure out what pulley you are refering to. You say it is in the middle on the drives side. Well on the driverside I just have a PS, a vaccum pump and all the way up top is my ac compressor, maybe you are talking about the one in the very middle of the engine just after the a/c or do you even have an a/c. Any how yes you can replace the pulley, but I can't see it needing three bolts to come off. That sounds more like the ps or vaccum pump. They both have three bolts holding them on. I believe my pulleys just have the one bolt that goes through the center of the pulley and bearing and attaches to the engine. I hope that helps some.
You are going to have to replace the whole pump if you are sure that it is what is making the noise. They are a little pricey, and you need the tool kit to remove the pulley of the pump. The tool kit removes the pulley by pulling it off from the middle or center of the pulley(the pulley is just a metal wheel). You can't use the universal ones that pull from the outside. This will likely bend your pulley. The bearing is in the pump. I recently did mine and with the right tools it should only take maybe a hour, but with out those tools you could be at it all day. The pump itself says not to take it apart, so thats way I dont think you can just repalce the bearing. I think its all or nothing. You can take the pump off and see if you have some play in the shaft or turn it yourself and see how it feels in your hands as you turn it. That way you might really know for sure that it is the vaccum pump.
I kinda figured it was gonna require replacing the pump. I actually checked each pully with the wd40 I would stick the long red nozzle behind the pulley while the truck was running and give a little spray and as soon as I hit the vac pump pulley with wd it got quiet for a few seconds then gradually started squealing so that is what has me believing that is my problem
I think this can be useful for you it was stored in my PC:
There was a thread about a week ago on vacuum pumps. Yes there is a bit of oil or grease inside the pump to lubricate the needle * ball bearings the eccentric run on. There's not enough that it can tolerate much of a leak. The pump is held on with three capscrews You can get an open end wrench on easily. DO NOT follow the factory manual instructions to drain the cooling system & remove the radiator! Remove the whole pump after removing the serpentine belt and disconnect the air intake hose from the air filter box to the vacuum pump. Put the pump in a vice and use a power steering pulley puller tool to remove the pulley from the old pump. Take the three capscrews out of the old pump and install them IN THE NEW PUMP....put the new pump in the vice carefully....install the old pulley flush with the end of the shaft making sure the three capsrews are still in the new pump. Reinstall the new pump, tighten the three capscrews, connect the air inlet line, reinstall the belt.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
I used a bolt and four or five whashers to press mine on also had to use a large filter wrench ( flat metal banding type)to hold the pulley/pump from turning. Cant rember the bolt size to press it on but I used to differnt lenght bolts. One longer as to not strip out the vacuam pump spindel when starting out and one shorter as to not bottom out. You could just stack more washer as you go along. but start out with 4 our 5 whashers as you will just bend inwords one or two. I had to replace mine as the pump body broke in half. there appered to small amount of oil (looked like brake fluid)inside as it did spray out when it broke. Dont know if it belongs their. Second pump replaced in year and half. Had the second one onboard. Note if pump fails you will lose your power assit for your brakes better rember wheir your e-brake is.<o></o>
Thanks that helps I priced a new pump last night I will probably pick one up this weekend the squealing is getting louder than the radio that means something bad is happening
