How strong is a NP201(came in earlier dodge's, not sure of others) in comparison to a NP205? My buddy runs a tractor tire truck and he swears by the 201, says he breaks 205s can't break this 201. If this is true why haven't I heard of them until now?
Your buddy probably tells you about the nig fish that seems to always get away too. He is not breaking 205's and having luck with a 200, 201, or even a 202. while most of the 200, 201 parts are interchangable with the later 205, there are a few differences. The PTO plate has fewer bolts on th 205, only 6 vs 10. The output bearing retainers are aluminum on the 205, because the 205 does not have a heavy drun brake hanging off of the back. Many of the internal parts are interchangeable and are very similar. The 205 was first introduced around the late 60's and the 200 was used in WWI dodge trucks. The 201 eveloved from it in 1957 and was used until 1968, and the more desireable 205 was then introduced.
The 200, 201, and 202 units were a right side drop and used in dodge and international trucks.
Ask your friend what kind of parts he is breaking in the 205. Gotta be a real bad boy to do that, and that same truck would easily break the other cases too.
Still not breaking a 205 in the mud unless it was laready hurt. The earlier units are not any stronger.
Those tires will require a very low differential gear, taking a big load off of the case.
I haven't either.....but he says he's broken at least two. He runs militarys which come with that 6.72 gears plus double tcases one married to tranny for gearing(205) and another to the axles(201)
