NP205 with a VSS?

Apparently VSS isn't searchable...

so, what years/models Ford trucks , if any, came with a NP205 t-case with a VSS?

I want to use a NP205 to replace the full time t-case in my '97 Explorer, and I need one with the VSS. I have some 205 t-cases from the late 70's, can I adapt a VSS to one of them?

I thought the Explorers used the VSS signal from the rear axle, like the F-150's, as they both have the 8.8 rear. If this is the case, then you should be able to adapt that 205 right in as I know that on my 95, there are no ecm signals running to the t-case except for the push button shift. You will still need to make sure the output shaft on your tranny matches the input of the 205, whith that said, unless you are planning on running some monster motor and big axles with huge tires, why not just get a BW-1356 t-case out of a late 90's Bronco or F series? The lighter aluminum case would be less weight to drag around, come in manual shift versions, and would be easier on your conversion. Check ebay or your local salvage yards as they are usually plentiful.

Not saying that the 205 is less than the 1356, just trying to help you save weight and headaches of making adapters and crossmembers.

My '97 has the VSS in the t-case and the ABS in the rear axle. In '98 Ford put the VSS and ABS both in the rear axle (for the Explorers). One reason I wanted to use a 205 is because I have 4 of them in my storage trailer, so I wouldn't have to buy another t-case. My X has a stock 5.0 and I plan on running 35's or 36's, so an aluminum unit would hold up just fine. I'm wanting a t-case with the lowest hanging front output shaft to help with the front driveshaft angle since I plan on a lot of lift. The 205 output seems to hang low, but I've never paid much attention to the aluminum case. I'm thinking you're right though, that an aluminum case already with the VSS would be much simpler.

Get a vss for a mid 90's 1/2 ton, and it might even be the same as the one in your explorer. I tryed a couple of things to make my 205 work with the factory speedo in my 92 and i found that the stock vss bolts right into the hole for the manual speedo cable. If Ford used the same style stuff in the explorer as the 1/2 tons, all you will have to do to the mounting flange that you have on the back of the tranny is grind out a slot for the shifter bar on the 205 like i did on my zf tranny and it will bolt right on. Good luck.

well the 205's were dropped from production in 1980 and i dont recal ford going to VSS until about 87ish so i doubt you'll find one from the factory!

get a sterling 10.25 rear after about 1988 and you can get the VSS in the axle AND get a one ton rear

Thanks for the info Tdvjensen.

fishmanndotcom, are you saying I can use the VSS signal from a Sterling axle to connect to my computer?

Here are a couple pics of the Sterling axle I have...

That's the one! You should also have that same plug on top of your 8.8. I have that on top of my 95 F-150's 8.8 and is where my VSS signal comes from. That 's why I thought your Explorer would get the signal from there and not your transfer case. I have the hole on my 1356 case, but there is a blank plug in it. Either way you go, the 1 ton axle will be nice for hard running under your Explorer.

And I think I forgot to mention that I didnt get that vss to work properly for my stock speedo. The vss in the diff is the one that you will need to be more conerned with. When i hooked it up with the one in the t-case my speedo was off by approx 440%.

Umm, last I checked, your Exploder has a Ranger style T-case, and a 205 ain't gonna bolt in there....
As for your VSS, if it's like a Ranger, it has both already, and just uses the one on the trans for the speedometer.

My X has a 5.0, 4R70W, and AWD t-case, but I'm guessing it's still similar to the Ranger. What problems will I run into putting the 205 in there? The bolt pattern on the tailhousing/adapter looks to be the same. And yes, I have my VSS on the t-case.

since you have the v8, and the 4r70w is just fancy lettering for the aod-e, then i would assume that you will only have to cut that notch that i was talking about for the shifter bar. Measure the size of the bolt circle on the 205 and on the adapter (diameter across circle made by bolts). Also take a piece of cardboard and make something like a gasket for the 205, punching out the hole locations etc and the notch for the shifter bars and size that up to the adapter in your X. If that all seems to line up ok, then mark the notch and cut it out. Also look at the number of splines of the output shaft and the input side of the 205. If they are the same number and the shaft is the same diameter, then they should slide together. Also measure the length of splines sticking out past the adapter. It should be about 1" to properly engage with the 205. If that looks all good then it should just bolt right up. Probably will have to fab up the shifter though, but thats small potatoes at this point. Good luck.

And i think that vss you are talking about in the t-case is one of two. Most likely used for the cruise controll etc, and there should also be one in the diff. Will it work properly in the 205, i have no idea. Will it bolt into the 205 hole, yes.

So i just swapped my 1992 f150's stock ford 8.8 rear end out of my truck for a ford 9 inch from a 79 bronco and i need to know if there is any way to relocate the vss or abs sensor to somewhere else on the truck because the trans is not shifting right anymore because its not getting a reading off the rear end. i saw that you guys were talking about a transfercase mounted one maybe?

Yeah the thread is 5 years old, but I am still a member and still subscribed, and had a 9" rear in my '92 F150. What transfer case you are running I am not sure, but I can tell you what I did to get around it.

What I ended up doing was I got a tone ring machined to press onto the output yoke of my transfer case, and then took the 8.8" VSS from the diff and made a little bracket that mounted to one of the bolts holding the rear output bearing in place to mount it. The only problem I had was due to vibration. My bracket was made out of a piece of 18 ga. steel, which proved to be not strong enough to keep the VSS steady, causing the speedo to jump around at certain speeds. If the truck didnt end up getting sold/returned broken/sold for parts, I would have taken it further.

There was a site that I got the idea from www.swampdiesel.com. As it was pointed out, this was 5 years ago and he doesn't go into detail about his tone ring anymore on the web, but if you get in touch with him he might be able to help you out more. I also dont have any pics of what I put together either. Hope this helps.
