This is my first post and I hope y'all can help. I have a 01 f-150 7700 with 99k on it. Last week the check engine light and OD off light was flashing. I checked the oil and it was dry. I refilled and reset the code by discon the battery. All was fine.. until this morning.. the OD off light is flashing and the check engine is back on. It shifts hard or not at all. I checked all fluids and they are fine. I need advice on this. I have no way of checking the codes unless i go to autozone. I am trying to avoid, at all cost, the stealership.. any advice would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks in advance..
Thanks ranger.. 1st post.. first offense? lol.. I was contemplating bringing it to them anyways as the small shops dont seem to have the right equipment all the time.
Welcome to the forum
Most auto parts stores such as AutoZone will scan them for free, but you might be better off to write down the codes and post them here, most of those guys don't have a clue about the OBD-II system and will try to sell you the wrong parts.
that od light means the tranny is sending fluid through the lines at full pressure to keep it from burning up, my 97 did the same thing, i to was $$ limited at the time so i dropped the pan, changed the filter and fluid, wiped everything down real good filled it back up and about 2 days later once it all cycled through im running like a champ again. problem free for about 3 or 4 months now. O and it would slam into every gear as well once it got warm, pull over kill the engine, restart it and it would stop for a while. makes no sense to me but hey.
I had the code pulled at autozone and checked it online. P1744 Torque Converter Clutch System Stuck in Off Position. Is this correct and if so how do i fix it? Its shifting harder but isnt consistent.
Your torque converter is slipping. When the computer detects this, it maxes out EPC line pressures in an attempt to keep everything else from slipping. It's trying to keep everything else from blowing up. Works sometimes. When you turn the engine off, the computer drops out of fail-safe mode until the fault is detected again.
Since you didn't have any engine oil (which won't cause a CEL anyway), I'd suspect the tranny's maintenance has also been neglected - just a strong hunch....
You probably have a tranny rebuild in your near future. Start saving your pennies, it takes a lot of them.
You can try changing your fluid and adding some RED LubeGuard, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Once the TC slips, its internal clutches usually are permanently damaged.
TC slippage is usually caused by valve body wear or other hydraulic leak in the circuit that supplies fluid pressure to the TC clutches. Low or neglected fluid will also cause it.
Thanks for all the input. I wouldnt have called them if it was something easy i could take care of but all of the input pointed to something i wasnt mechanically inclind to handle. I may be vehicleless for a cpl days but it will be worth it. And considering my warranty ran out I guess i am lucky.
