390 ?'s

I have a 1975 F100 with a 390, The truck did not come with a 390, so I can't look in my book for the correct timing. Just seeing what everyone else has there timming set to. Everything is stock except for the Edelbrock intake and Edelbrock Carb.

Also can some explain timming, like what is the difference between setting it higher does it give you more hp, torg, better gas milage?
Like what would the difference be between 8 and 12.

Thanks

Timing has to do with the relationship between your ignition to your crankshaft. If your timing is too slow(low number) it will have poor performance. The spark would be too slow and energy is wasted. If your timing is too fast(high number) the spark is too soon, and causes a preignition, or (ping) when accelerating or lugging it.
Your timing, depending on what grade fuel you use, your elevation, and compression, it should be in the same range as the 360. Better fuel, you can push the higher number a little. 87 octane, i wouldnt run over about 11 deg.
Mine runs best about at 11-12deg on premium. Try 10-11 and take it for a drive. If its an auto, powerstall it a little, not so much you spin out and listen for a pinging. If its a manual, make it lug in high gear and listen for the pinging. If it doesnt ping, you got it.
Dont try to push the envelope too much. Running too advanced can cause serious engine problems. It can also make it difficult to start, overheating, and dieseling.
I hope that answered your question.

I believe the factory setting is 6BTDC but I have never got an FE to perform well there. Set it to 12 and if it doesn't like the gas you choose to run either back it off or get better gas. Your right foot and MPG estimates are far better than the sticker under the hood.
