Side Mirror Damaged
Step 1 Find a parking garage too narrow for the truck to fit in
Step 2 proceed with caution (you will be tempted to fold in the mirror but do not do it)
Step 3 Listen for the crunch (I choose to cuss like a sailor at this point) with out thinking put the truck in reverse and back up
That's it the cover will come off like magic!
hehehe. Sure you take the easy way.
Some nurlnut clipped my 06 XLT driver's mirror last week. took out the lens on the turn light, hit it so hard there was a black mark on the window, a black glob on the back of the mirror and a scratch in the clearcoat on the door. I suspect either a work trailer or delivery van clipped her, had an o s**t moment, and drove off off in a panic, fearing my wrath :-).
The clearcoat is fixed. Amazingly, the mirror is okay, the heat still heats, the power still works, and all the LED's still work, (yay for tucktape) but there's only a tiny bit of lens left. Ford told me I had to buy a whole new mirror. The partsman showed me the catalogue, and it didn't appear there's a part number for the lens. it looks integral to the LED assembly, not the back. I've been to pickapart and a couple of wrecker yards, no joy. I haven't been able to find a part online, just the whole mirror.
Does this sound right to you all?

Otherwise, if all you want is the light you might want to think about the Recon ones.

it's a long story involving an oddly connected dryer vent, a hot air duct, and, er, uncontrolled discharge of dessicated kitchen debris. apparently, coffee beans dont shrink, but cheerios do. i am trying to not think about the other bits.

following applies to replacing the driver's side mirror back.
on an '06 you need a long flat blade screwdriver, two or three putty knives or frosting spreaders, and a good flashlight. there are either three or four back clip anchors. if you have power, there are three anchors. top left, right top and bottom.
turn off the truck, and fold the mirror towards the hood. crank the mirror towards the bottom right. this exposes the upper left clip. use your flashlight to look for a little horizonal jaw clip. slide your screwdriver horizontally into the clip sides. gently lever them up. while doing this, try to separate the back from the mirror housing. use a small putty knife to do this. as it comes apart, slide the knife into the gap and leave it to hold the clip apart. you can use electrical tape or a nylon pancake turner or froster here if you are concerned about scratches.
crank the mirror over so that the right side upper is exposed. use your screwdriver to to flip the clip off. wiggle another putty knife into the gap, and leave it there. crank the mirror to expose the lower right clip, and release the clip. if you have a non-power mirror repeat for the lower left clip.
flip the mirror towards the window so you are working from the back. gently wiggle the back off. use your putty knives and fingers to work the back off.
if you have led blinkers, your mirror back will be dangling from a molex and some wires. unhook the molex.
hook up the molex to the new back. now, get your keys, switch to run and test the leds before you zip things up. test blinker and marker.
now, to zip it up, just wiggle and jiggle the back on. make sure that all the little edge clips have made contact, else the back wont be smooth. i did this at about 5C (40F), just needed some oomph. colder, suggest a heated garage or heat gun, else the plastic will crack.

I'll take a photo of my mirror and the part they cut and show you exactly what they did. I did not know how to remove the piece so I called the dealership and asked a guy I knew who worked there. He told me you just get something inbetween the piece and kind of snap it out. Well i've been working on things long enough to know when something isn't going right. I got inbetween the piece and applied some pressure. It seperated more but I could tell it wasn't going to come off and it was going to break with any more muscle added. So I called the guy back and asked him again. He said yeah, I'm sure that's how they do it here. So what i did was show up the next day unannounced and said hey buddy here's the mirror part. Now you can just show me what you meant. Just go ahead and snap it out real quick for me. Well he went and got one of the bodyshop guys and the guy came out and said oh, one of those... let me go and get Joe...I don't do these. I asked my buddy who is Joe? He said he's the guru of the bodyshop. Joe came out looked at it and said I gotta go get some tools. He came back with a Dremel and a fork looking prying mechanism and I already explained the rest. I sat there and watched thinking... SOABitch I knew there was more to it than what my buddy had said. Anyway, true story... I'll have to check out the way you explained it to me. I am going back to the dealership Tuesday and i'll ask Joe why he didn't do mine the way you explained? That sure is a hell of a lot less complicated.
