Quote:Racerx775: its easy to remove the cover. they are about $70 from ford.

I watched the body shop install mine. It took a dremmel to carefully cut a shallow square out of the old broken plastic without damaging the circuit board... and a lifting tool... and some finess. Without having seen it done there is no way I would have been able to do it without damaging the pieces. Mine was chrome on an 06 and not even close to 70 dollars... just sayin'

Dirtyeddie, what exactly are you talking about? What did they cut?

I replaced my factory chrome mirror backs with the black ones, and swapped in Recon smoked lights at the same time. The mirror back is very easy to remove. You tilt the mirror all the way in and look behind it. You will see two small tabs that you have to pry up with a long flat screwdriver. Tilt the mirror all the way out and look behind it and you will find one more. After those three tabs are undone the back pulls off the mirror and you unplug the light. I believe I paid around $70-80/pc for them from Y2kford.

And yes I was kind of kidding about duck tape. Although he said it was just a temporary fix until he could replace it, so it would work fine. I would personally probably use some kind of black tape instead though so it didn't stick out as much.

Thanks for the replys. Im gonna bite the bullet and get some new one here soon.

msgtg, thanks for the offer.

redford, I looked at the chrome ones, but I'm not really a chrome fan. I eventually want to black the entire truck.

Thanks again.

Hey, no problem. I just happened to have a spare passenger side mirror but it's got the black cover and it won't work with my painted covers, so I really don't mind helping you out if you want it. This is a new mirror so the covers never been used.

Just let me know Pal!

I'll take a photo of my mirror and the part they cut and show you exactly what they did. I did not know how to remove the piece so I called the dealership and asked a guy I knew who worked there. He told me you just get something inbetween the piece and kind of snap it out. Well i've been working on things long enough to know when something isn't going right. I got inbetween the piece and applied some pressure. It seperated more but I could tell it wasn't going to come off and it was going to break with any more muscle added. So I called the guy back and asked him again. He said yeah, I'm sure that's how they do it here. So what i did was show up the next day unannounced and said hey buddy here's the mirror part. Now you can just show me what you meant. Just go ahead and snap it out real quick for me. Well he went and got one of the bodyshop guys and the guy came out and said oh, one of those... let me go and get Joe...I don't do these. I asked my buddy who is Joe? He said he's the guru of the bodyshop. Joe came out looked at it and said I gotta go get some tools. He came back with a Dremel and a fork looking prying mechanism and I already explained the rest. I sat there and watched thinking... SOABitch I knew there was more to it than what my buddy had said. Anyway, true story... I'll have to check out the way you explained it to me. I am going back to the dealership Tuesday and i'll ask Joe why he didn't do mine the way you explained? That sure is a hell of a lot less complicated.

When I removed mine (I did it twice thusfar) we positioned the mirror all the way in and just reached behind it to pry/snap out the tabs to release the back cover.

One should never joke about the use of duct tape....that's a felony here in Wisconsin.

Dirtyeddie, are you talking about the paddle mirrors or the trailer tow mirrors like Fordsdowner posted above? I'm not sure how they do the paddle mirrors.

Am I best off just getting a new mirror from the dealer or can they be had online? I see a ton on ebay but none have the turn signals in them or are they heated.

I need the whole thing, wiped it out on a tree yesterday.

Check out these online Ford Parts dealers. They are all site sponsors and have better pricing then you will likely get at your local dealer.

Bernie, you should have paid attention to the George of the Jungle cartoons.

"Watch out for that TREE!"

Wink

I thought it was easy to take the cover off.

Step 1 Find a parking garage too narrow for the truck to fit in
Step 2 proceed with caution (you will be tempted to fold in the mirror but do not do it)
Step 3 Listen for the crunch (I choose to cuss like a sailor at this point) with out thinking put the truck in reverse and back up

That's it the cover will come off like magic!
