Fram Filter
anyway to change out my oil filter without draining the oil? I know impossible but with all the talk of the fram filter being POS's I went under to check and the wally wolrd guys got me, they put one in instead of the motorcraft they had sitting there. Guess I will go bitch, since it was in TX I dont know what these bozo's will do. Is there any documentation I can use to help my case on these filters sucking?

You can change the filter without changing the oil. You will lose some oil but the bulk of it is in the pan. You will just need to fill the filter and top off the pan. Do you know what kind of oil they put in, for sure?

yeah they used rotella synthectic 5w40 2 guys brought out 16 bottles of it, and when I came back when they were done there were empty bottles in the trash can by mytruck that werent before. I just never thought make sure they had the right filter. I will go buy one and change it tonight thanks!

Apparantly they have a bad rep from somewhere I cannot remember. I have used them in the past in other vehicles with no problems, but this one has had strictly Motorcraft since I have had it.

Been using them for 20 years every 3-4 months without any problems that I can tell. I do prefer the Motorcraft 820 on the Expy, but have used Fram on my other vehicles for years.

I've used Fram filters for years and have never seen any problem. If you look here:
http://theoildrop.server101.com/foru...gonew=1#UNREAD you will see that Fram filters are not real popular. I now avoid them when I can, but I don't treat them like the plague as some would have you do. I now use an Amsoil EaO99. Not cheap, but I've heard real good things about it.
Although you will lose about a quart of oil that is in the filter, you can reduce the amount that may continue to drip from the filter mount. Remove the oil fill cap, place a clean rag over the hole, put a shop vac to the oil fill. This will apply a slight vacuum to the crank case and the negative pressure will decrease the amount of oil that drips out.
I once needed to change the washer on an oil drain plug in the pan. I followed the above method and barely lost a drop of the fresh oil.

There's more than a quart in there. Closer to two. Also, I think some drains out of the cooler, too. I usually pierce the bottom of the filter and let it drain -- MUCH easier than having it run down the side of the filter, then having to deal with a very full and HEAVY oily filter.
