Hey, guys. Just wondering what to start looking at with a cruise control that decided not to work anymore. The only reference I have is the Haynes book and they don't have anything in there for diagnosing cc problems. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
If it just all of a sudden quit working, you need to disconnect the brake switch on top of your master cylinder. The failure of this switch can lead to your car catching on fire. Next you need to take the Explorer in to the dealership and have them replace the part and preform the recall work needed to fix the problem. If you search this fourm you will find information on the recall and what is causing the failure and car fires.
The brake switch is located on the top of the master cylinder, to disconnect it just disconnect the plug on top of the switch
I replaced the switch ($20 dealer) on the top front of the master cylinder on my 95 and it fixed the problem. Very easy repair. Not sure if it's covered under the recall.
Not all Explorers are covered under this recall. My was not and I still had the same problem with the speed control deactivation switch on top of the master cylinder being defective and I have a 96 Explorer. My switch was leaking with the fluid even traveling along the length of the wiring harness and getting into the connection at the far side on the passenger side of the engine compartment. Was easy to replace the switch but a hassle cleaning out all the fluid along the harness and the opposite connection. Ordered the switch from Rockauto...
