1954 Ford F100 Problem
But since the truck is already configured to hold the 289, that is a good engine, or it's big brother the 351 Windsor engine should be a direct swap. There is a lot you can do with the Windsor engine
Unless you are taking the truck apart to paint, finish the mechanics first or you will invariably screw up your paint job swapping engines. also if you are going to clean up your engine compartment (paint whatever) yo uwill want to do that before painting the outside.
Did try to get a photo of that buckle, but you can't see it on the photo.
So, here a little update for my F100. Did take off the whole Bed. will get the parts for sandblast on Wednesday.... The Cab and the Front I will do in this winter.
The new engine will come for the weekend of June 20th. So, hopefully I can ride it after that weekend.

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I had a 55 with the same 289 and a 3spd overdrive. It was a dream drivetrain as long as you weren't looking for a huge acceleration off the line.
One thing I learned in those early mustang 289s is they were notorious for having inadequate cooling to the heads, especially in the rear of the engine. I would bet your two broken pistons and cracked head are on the passenger side in the back.
With the set-up you have (motor mounts, etc) you could get a later model 289 or direct drop in a 351 Windsor - which is another dream engine. If I had the choice of any engine to put in my truck (like I had the bucks to start from scratch) I'd be tempted to go withthe 289/351 and when I rebuilt, try to upgrade to a "high performance" model.
Good Luck!
