80w90 is good enough for the rear end too. i believe the only reason ford started the 75w140 thing a few years ago was to get slightly better gas mileage out of it so they could put a better epa mileage rating on the truck when it was new on the lot.
this is also the reason for 5w20 motor oil recomendations in the gas engines which actually causes engine wear but better gas mileage.
i use royal purple 10-30 in my 5.4.
as far as front axle, book says 75-90, rear is 75-140. i use royal purple ith those as well.
I don't know why they changed to 75-140 but it sure wasn't to get better MPG. going to a thicker oil will not give you better MPG.

Uh, no, there were lots of Sterling failures early on, when they went to synthetic, it stopped.
i bought my 2000 f250 sd with a 5.4 from a ford dealer with 60,000 miles about 9 months ago and it had 5w20 in it at the time. on cold starts the lifters would make alot of noise for a minute and when it would warm up at idle there was a slight knock from the engine. not sure if it was piston slap or what. at the first oil change i put in quaker state 10w30 and the engine hasn't made a sound since i started using that. i've changed the oil 4 or 5 times since then.
i had an f150 with a 4.6 before this truck and used nothing but 10w30 qs for it's whole life and never had a problem with engine knocks or ticks and i sold the truck with close to 200,000 miles on it.
