would you speak regular english"quote from rosco p. coltrain" do you mean it take 1 minute for your defroster to switch bledn doors operation w/ your 4x4 enguaged?? if so you may have a vacuum leak somewhere or a weak pump.

That is not normal, your seals are shot and need to be replaced. They are the inner pieces of the seal that have come apart.

the ones he has decribed here are only the dust seals between the axle u-joints and the axle tubes. yes they should be replaced but these have nothing to do w/ his 4x4 toilette seals that are actually for the 4x4 aurtomatic system and pressed onto the propeller shafts and sit inside of the knuckle..

Could that be my vacuum leak, even though it is on the axle not the hub?

I am so sorry about that. What I meant to say was that when I switch it from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive the defroster comes on and then it goes back to the seting I had the heater on in the first place.

the problem with not replacing the bad seal is that it will let water in and ruin the needle bearings. A user on this forum named guzzle has a great write up on how to replace the seals.

Before replacing the hub seals, I would follow the vacuum lines back from each hub to the vacuum pump, checking for leaks or the posibilty one line got pulled out of the hub or the T fitting. The ends tend to get brittle going into the hub and crack. A lot easier to fix than replacing the hub seals.

you have a vaccum leak, the heater will always default to defrost so if there is a machanicall problem you will still be able to clean your windshield and be able to drive. check the pump and the little black plastic lines by the pump, they get brittel and crack over time.

If it is the hubs, instead of replacing them why not just use it as is and lock the factory hubs manually when I want 4 wheel drive.

VTX, I also have a VTX 1800c (2003).

you can, it is completely up to you. if the large 4x4 seals are leaking it can allow moisture to ruin the spindle bearsing over time though, this willruin the alxe as well. the alxes can be up to $500 each and the wheel bearings that will wear out after the bearing inside the bore fails are abotu $350 I believe per side!!! the seals are some time on a saturday and about $40 each.

So even after a minute it switches back to the floor heater. So I have a leak thats hard to belive with both trucks doing that from day 1. Where do I find the air hoses and how much would a new air hose be,
