If I put on the Warn ones I no longer have shift-on-the-fly right? Then I have to get out and turn the hubs every time I want to go in 4x?
I noticed a rubber ring (seal?) loose between the u-joints, at the hubs, and the axle housing. Both sides are the same, is that normal

To answer your question yes you will loose the "Shift on the Fly" However you will still need to turn the know to select 4x4h or 4x4l to engage the t-case.

As far as what your asking about the rubber hanging down. Kinda sounds like your describing a CV boot like my old car. Sorry not quite sure there buddy.

sounds to me like you have a bad vacuum pump or a leak at the canister, very common for both concerns.

That is the back side of the main hub seal. It's proably dry rotted. I just replaced mine when I did my ball joints. Mine was hanging loose too.

Check the ball joint thread for pictures and part numbers.

The seal is causing the vacuum leak. It is the hub seal. You can drive with the hubs in the "lock" position and nothing bad will happen. It is a good idea to manually lock them in once a month to lube the front end up.

I wouldn't call a vacuum leak "nothing bad".

you had also stated above that your heater was working intermittently, so w/ that said you have another concern as well. the 4x4 TOILETTE bowl seals as we call them will not cause the heater blend doors to work intermittently but will cause your 4x4 auto mode not to work correctly.

you need the proper driver to replace these seals when you replace you BJ's.

Hydro,
The "seal" is on the inside (axle side) of the u-joint. To be vacuum leak it would have to be on the hub side, right?

The NP 203 transfer case used in Chrysler and GM vehicles was made to be full time 4wd. The SD case is not. It can damage front end parts.

no either or, the hub itself can leak vacuum although it is rare, we have a test kit for the knuckle and the hub to detect leaks.
