The stock 7.3 cooler uses 9 passages for cooling while the 6.0 uses 25 rows! And it has the same mounting points. My trans runs 30* cooler at the hardest pull, and 40* normal driving great mod! The tru -cool is less money $120 vs $300 but not near as big.
FWIW, I just removed my Tru-cool Max and stock tranny cooler in place of a stock 31 Row 6.0 cooler. I found the tranny getting warmer, not hot, than I would like in these 100*+ temps. Brian at BTS also highly recommended the swap. I would save money in the long run and buy the 31 row 6.0 cooler rather than the tru cool. Would have saved me money in the long run...I can sell you a tru cool for a good price...!!!!
heres a tough question, have a 7.3, I don't tow, and just put in a BTS VB, have the DP, 4" exhaust, air filter, zoodad, and I flushed my transmission, have new fluid, here is my question, today, I was on the interstate driving 80, outside temp was 65, and the warmest my trannie got was 120 and i'm stock with the innercooler, would I be wasting money on a 6-doh or a trucool?
I might wait till it gets hot next week, but even with dirty transmission fluid, and 95 the warmest my tranie got was 170 degrees
I never consider an upgrade/improvement to a critical powertrain problem as a waste of money. That said, if you KNOW FOR SURE that you will never tow and have to save money, go w/ the Tru Cool. Again, my vote is for the 31 row 6.0 cooler.
Slightly OT, but I think my tranny runs cooler with Jody's tune vs. stock. I have the 40hp tow. Last year I towed through the VA mtns to a campground, and the last few miles were 15mph curves uphill ... tranny temps were over 190 (but didn't get to 200). Scared me a bit. This year with his tune installed it didn't get above 175 (and I think it was hotter out this year). Not a scientific test by any means, but you get the point...
BTW I have the tru-cool installed, but no other tranny mods.
