I was on the road yesterday afternoon in my '02 when I suddenly had the radio shut off on its own. Immediately all my gauges (I was specifically watching the tach and speedo) went all the way over to the right, dropped back to the left for a second or two, then resumed their operating position as the radio came back on. I was doing 35 mph at the time and the engine itself never missed a beat. Everything has been working fine since then.
I don't have factory remote locks or alarm and I haven't run across these symptoms on threads describing VSM problems. Any ideas?
I thought the gauges going max to zero was a PCM reset? I had an electrical short that would cause the PCM to try and reset while driving that would either cause a momentary stall or cause it to die on my 02. Turned out to be the main engine wiring harness. Stand on the driver side and look in front of the master cylinder but behind the intake hose for the turbo. Next to the valve cover you will see a square box with wires coming up to it from the bottom and continuing up from the box. Check for rubbing or shorts at the valve cover below the square box, and against a bracket above the box. There's also an issue with a harness rubbing the top of the driver front shock, but my truck did not have this harness. If you can't figure out where I'm talking about let me know and someone will give you a better description or I will post a picture.
F350-6 thanks for the reply, and sorry for taking so long to respond. I spent Saturday installing a 3-gauge A-pillar and yesterday putting up hay before the rains come in. I'll check the harness tonight. I know exactly where you're talking about. When I replaced the glow plugs last year I found one spot on the harness where it had nearly rubbed through the insulation near the driver's side valve cover. I wouldn't surprise me at all if there is another spot that I missed. Thanks again.
