<!-- message --><!-- google_ad_section_start -->This is not a mass air flow 302 but it has a maps sensor so its speed density. Lately it has been running horrible. Very rich. Black smoke out the tail pipes. I don't get any codes with my scanner. The issue is it won't start unless you put your foot to the floor with the gas pedal. It runs rough on initial start up but then smooths out. If you shut it off then go to fire you have to put the gas pedal to the floor again and black smoke out the pipes. I realize it has to be running rich but how and where do I start to correct this issue. It was running fine until the last month were it started doing this all the time. Previuosly it might do this once and a while but it was rare. Fuel pressure was what I was thinking. This is on a EFI 302 however. I am getting black smoke and black liquid comming out of my tail pipes. I just don't have a fuel pressure gauge to check on the shrader valve. I changed the o2 sensor the old one was completely carboned up, coated completely. It has to be running way rich but not getting codes.

Well it doesn't seem to be a fuel pressure issue.
I am getting code 116. Something about coolant not being at the expected temp either hot or cold. The truck was at operating temp. Does this indicate a bad ECT sensor?
I would bet on the coolant temp sensor. If you have a bad sensor and its telling the comp its not at the right temp, the comp will adjust the fuel/air ratio and that would cause a rich running condition like you have.
Yep ECT sensor went. Basically the computer was running the truck with the choke on because it didn't know the temp of the engine. I replaced the sensor with a good Ford one and not the plastic crap one I had in the truck. Glad the truck is running properly again. Thx for your help peeps.
yes my wife was very happy that I fixed her Truck. Yes I said Her truck. She wanted a pretty truck and this is what we bought. I have added a 4 inch lift 33" tires headers a offroad y-pipe and a cat back flowmater exhaust. it also has a Cold Air Intake and a cam. It really is a pretty truck and it sounds sweet aswell.
Yes I think in a couple of years we will have to upgrade to a super crew. Its a little tough using this truck with 2 kids in car seats. The red neck mini-van is in our future. Man I like them supercrew pickups.
