I've owned my 87 2.9 since it was new & have used Amsoil 10-40 engine oil since 5K miles.
When I was driving 20K miles a year I changed it every 10K miles.
Now I only drive about 6K miles a year & change it once a year.
Truck has 230K miles on it with zero engine problems, and the engine is still in great shape. Looks like the engine will easily make it to 300K.
The 2.9 is also famous for noisy lifters, but i've never had that problem on mine.
If you use a good synthetic oil, you should'nt have any problems.

Sounds like the 1st owner was'nt real good about routine maintenance, or maybe he beat the truck to death offroading.
Mine is also EFI & I bought it brand new, so all maintenance has been done on time.
In the first 100K the only problem that I had was to replace the rubber -what was ford thinking-tie rod ends.
One thing I did when I bought it was to just say NO to silly options like automatic transmission & ABS brakes.
I also use Amsoil synthetic gear lube in the manual transmission & differenial.
Seems to be working out pretty good as I've also had zero problems with the trans & differential.
What sort of probs have you had with yours?
