The 3.0 is quite a different design from the 2.9 so I'd be very surprised if the distributors will interchange. But you can remote mount your TFI without replacing the distributor. If you look in the wrecking yards at early to mid-'90s cars like the T-bird and Cougar you'll find that they had a nifty little finned heat sink with thew TFI module mounted on it. You get one of those (don't get the module though, it's a bit different) and mount your module on (be sure to use dielectric grease under the module to help conduct heat) and put it wherever you like in the truck. Make up a simple 3-wire harness with spade connectors at both ends, the male ends will plug into the distributor where the mdole used to plug in and the female ends will plug onto the module. Don't use cheap crimp-on connectors though, use good quality solder-on connectors and heat shink the ends. You'll also need to modify the heat sink fins to clear the wiring and connectors.
I haven't actually done this but I'm planning to give it a try myself and that's pretty much what I figured to try, I already have a heat sink off of a '93 T-bird, and I've read a bit about remote-mounting the TFI module. Maybe you can try it and be the guinea pig for us...
