I broke the end of the stud off trying to remove it. How do you get the broken piece out now? I am not sure if it even screwed out at all. so not even sure I can get the timing chain cover off. HELP
92, 302, location ,lower left side. it is the stud that has a nut on the outside it goes through the bracket, that holds the A/C & power steering pump.
well what i would do is soak the broken bolt with penetrating oil like pb blaster or some other brand....NOT wd40 its not strong enough. then go and buy a reverse thread drill bit thats about half the size of the hole give or take. then carefully and slowly start drilling (IN REVERSE so the reverse drill bit will be actually drilling into the bolt) into the center of the bolt. what should happen and happens MOST of the time but not all is the reverse thread will start to go in and the bolt will unfreeze from the threads and it will just unscrew from the housing. thats what i did on a Chrsyler Concorde at the shop i work at and it worked great. worse case scenario that will just drill right through and you will need to buy a new bolt/stud and rethread the hole but thats worse case
89frankenford is right. They sell complete drill-out sets for this purpose. I've had good luck with them. The key is patience and to dirll straight down the middle of the bolt. Soaking the bolt at least a couple blasts each hour for a few hours before you try it helps too.
I would try the reverse drill bit first, before trying the easy out. If you break off the "easy off" in the hole you will have drilled in the bolt, you will have complicated your problem.
It is fixed. we had to use a tap and heli -coil. the original stud was broke off in the block and easy out could not reach it. then used a shorter bolt to bite the threads and bamb. water pump back on. thank you one and all for the advice. this site rocks. Jeff

I don't like trying to drill and ez out a broken bolt if the bolt is siezed. If you break your ez out, now your really up the creek. Spot weld a welding rod or some other stud to the stub, heat the area where it is seized and back out with vice grips.
Bolts seized in around the water pump area will come out like nothing with some heat.
